11/17/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Things can always change but right now, Davon is a wary little guy who is not too comfortable with the premises he landed in… ” Where am I, who are all those dogs and people, are they friends or foes.?” It must be pretty tough for a small chap like Davon to deal with this big change in his life. He almost bolted out of his kennel as I opened his door but then walked quite nicely around the block, doing his business without marking. He is a very cute, smallish young man, healthy and dressed in a latte and cream coat. Free in a pen, Davon did not want to do anything with me, even look at me or accept my treats. He soft-growled at dogs passing by our area. He was clearly very uncomfortable. I needed to spend more time with him. Little by little, Davon relaxed, his eyes were less leery, his tail went up and he came when I called him. He sat for treats and even went to check my goodies bag. He did not mind me reminding him the saying: “Thou shall not steal…” He rubbed himself on my legs, sat by me, accepted my caresses and more treats. Progress was made…Davon felt a little better. I can not say at this point that I know Davon. He is shaken up by this sudden change of gears and not yet revealing his true self. He needs more time. Davon is at the Manhattan Care Center, trying to find his bearings in this big new world that is not his. I hope that soon enough, he will be ready and happy to meet people and dogs alike and find the loving home every pooch dreams to live in. Another volunteer writes: Sweet, shy and gorgeous. He’s a little imp wearing a soft tan and white coat. Scared when he first joined us, he was reluctant to make friends, just not sure of anything in this new, loud and active place. I’m proud to call this little guy my friend now, we snuggle and kiss, he wags his tail, and looks at me with the softest eyes. His little nose points up, and I laugh as his markings look like he was playing in someone’s makeup kit and got into some lipstick. Too cute! He’s so grateful for attention and love, never pushy, and during his behavior assessment jumped up to lick the assessor’s face. Seriously, how sweet is that? Davon’s discomfort extends to other dogs as well, so he prefers to be the only dog in your home. Davon needs a slow approach so that he can take his time getting to know you. The reward for your patience is so amazing. He has my heart and I know he’ll have yours as soon as you meet him.
11/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Davon came into our center after a member of the public found him as a stray. Davon was nervous during intake and backed away from petting and leashing. Once collared, he was easy to place in and out of kennel. Davon was nervous during his initial medical exam but allowed all handling. He pulled slightly on leash for his relief walk and whined slightly when in the SAFER assessment room. Davon was easy to position for all tactile portions of the SAFER assessment. He jumped up to lick assessor’s face during Look item. Davon stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, tail wag, mouth open. He playfully engaged during Tag game, jumping on assessor playfully at end of game. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, tail wag. Davon had minimal interest in Toy, sniffing before turning away. He approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, then growled. The Behavior Team feels Davon would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction at first to give him time to relax and know what to expect. Once comfortable, Davon was soft and friendly and allowed all handling. He may also benefit from being the only resident dog. Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture, mouth open. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away. Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog ears forward, tail above spine level, growls.
11/18/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
While in our care, Davon has not yet had an off-leash intoduction to another dog. When introduced to another dog through a barrier, Davon stiffens, then beins to growl with increasing volume. Davon arrived into our care center as a stray, so further history on his interactions with other dogs is unknown. At this time, the behavior department advises against immediate placement into a home with another dog.
