11/17/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Gobstopper… I broke a tooth on a jawbreaker, a type of candy I used to like so much as yes, they did change color and flavor as they were sucked on. Our jawbreaker, Gobstopper will not hurt you, only love you because she is one sweet and affectionate lady. She was found in the company of Mars Bars, a middle aged gal, just as chunky, well cared for, perfectly groomed and healthy as she is. Gobstopper too does not “get” what she is doing in this place that is not hers, with those people she does not know and mostly these dogs who are not part of the crowd she usually mingles with. She is a “proper” lady. She enjoys the company of humans and will hop on the bench or sit “tied up” to my legs for caresses and hugs. She loves treats, will sit for them and I laugh seeing her ears spreading upward and outward when she chomps the dry freeze lung treats. Gobstopper is quite a good looking dog with clear amber eyes and dressed in a silky golden robe. She walks so nicely on the leash and does not really pay attention to other dogs as we go around the block. She seems very much house trained and does her business as we go. Gobstopper, clearly, was a family dog and not a yard dog, and we do hope that soon enough, she will find her way to a home sweet home and the loving heart of an owner . Gobstopper is at the Manhattan Care Center. Another volunteer writes: I learn something new every day. Today I learned what a Gobstopper is… and I love that this mushy dog, who loves to cuddle and give kisses is named after that candy. Rubenesque, likely housetrained, well groomed in a coat as smooth as silk, Gobstopper draws admiring glances from passersby as she’s so soft looking. She poses for photos while keeping her eye on the treat in my hand (you can tell by looking at her that she loves treats), and simply put, it’s great that there is more of her to love! And love her you will…..I promise.
11/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Gobstopper came into our center along with another large dog when a member of the public found them tied to a fence. She allowed all handling during intake. Gobstopper pulled a bit on leash for her relief walk. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body neutral. Gobstopper stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, tail down, ears back, mouth open. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, sitting down/settled easily at end. Gobstopper did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She had no interest in Toy and did not approach the helper dog, exited. However, when attempting to place Gobstopper in playgroup, she growled through the gate and was unable to meet. The Behavior Team feels Gobstopper would do well in an Average home. She may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and proper response to dogs she is unfamiliar with. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is down, body soft, ears back, mouth open. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, sits and settles easily at end. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Toy 1. No interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog, exits.
