06/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cypress came into the care center as a owner surrender with only limited information, but her owner did state Cypress has very high energy and loves to run around and play with balls. She was also said to be very house trained and does well in her crate for 8 hours. At intake Cypress was reported to have stiff body language, so the counselor did not attempt any handling, but during her medical exam she was reported to be calm and allowed all handling. During SAFER Cypress was a bit fearful, and repeatedly attempted to exit the room. She was a bit tense for some of the handling, but allowed the assessor to complete each item without issue. She had a relaxed body posture when following the assessor at the end of the leash during the tag interaction, but at the end of the game she did not approach the assessor and attempted to exit. During the resources portion of the assessment Cypress was not interested in any of the items. Cypress appears to be fearful and avoids interaction in the care center. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Cypress is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. The department feels she would likely do best with an experienced adopter who is able to provide positive experiences for Cypress. 06/23/15 Additional information: When in the kennel Cypress has been reported to growl and lunge when approached, and has also been reported to snap at staff members when attempting to place food in her kennel. Due to this behavior the department feels placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is down her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, ears back. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1 & 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: when off leash with other dogs Cypress does not approach to greet the helper dog, and remained in a corner with fearful body language.
