06/04/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Clyde came into the care center as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. During SAFER Clyde pulled hard on the leash and was a bit difficult to position, but once settled he allowed the assessor to conduct some handling without issue. He did become stiff and uncomfortable during the paw handling, and also became stiff and body checked the assessor during the tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment, Clyde became stiff and bit the assess-a-hand when pushed out of the food bowl, and he repeated the same behavior when the toy item was being removed, but showed no interest in the rawhides. Clyde has also been reported to show possessive behavior over toys that were in his kennel. Due to these behaviors we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while pulling back paw. Flank squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Food: 5. Dog bites assess-a-hand. Toy 1: 5. Dog bites assess-a-hand Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Clyde was very loose at the gate and his tail wagging. He is a very polite and tolerant greeter who appeared to enjoy wandering the yard with the presence of male and female dogs.
