12/15/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Chino is a handsome young lad, overly thin but smartly dressed in a perfectly groomed bright orange coat. Chino is welcoming in his den . He is a hungry caterpillar and his first task is to sample kibbles left over by a neighbor dog…..He is excited to go out , a little wary too. His eyes are keen. He is in alert , listening for noises and watching carefully for dogs looming in the distance. Once close, Chino is cool with them, even playing nicely in playgroup with a young female his age. He pulls a little on the leash, marks slightly his territory and likes to chase pigeons. Free in a pen, Chino likes to stay around me, saluting here and there a staff coming around. He comes right away when called and enjoys very much caresses. What a sweet and young face he has. Although famished, Chino sits beautifully for treats and is very attentive waiting for the next delicacy to be waived in front of his nose. Believe it or not, he is quite polite taking dry liver from my hand. Chino is a young prince who has not yet claimed a castle… He had the life of a pauper but it is about to change with your help. Chino is indeed waiting to meet you at the Manhattan Care Center and hoping to be soon your forever best friend.
12/14/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Chino came into our center as an owner surrender. He was friendly upon intake. Chino pulled hard on leash when he found something he was interested in during his relief walk, sniffing all around him frequently. He held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, tail wagging, body soft. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, ears back, eyes squinting, jumping up on assessor with moderate intensity at end of item, staying in that position hugging and licking face. Chino was distracted during Tag game, crouched at each pass, jumped up playfully at end of game. He did not pull paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Chino had no interest in Toy. When off leash with other dogs Chino may attempt to mount but responds well to correction and is more interested in play. He solicits and engages in bouncy, running play with a playful female. The Behavior Team feels Chino would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners as well as not to jump up. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is distracted and unresponsive , crouches when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends, jumping up and remaining there to hug and lick face. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Chino may attempt to mount but responds well to correction and is more interested in play. He solicits and engages in bouncy, running play with a playful female.
12/12/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Chino engages in bouncy play with females but does attempt to mount (he is currently unaltered). He may become aroused with vocal play in adjacent pens and then redirects onto the dogs he is interacting with. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, the behavior department recommends Chino have a pre-adoption interaction before going to a home with another dog. When off leash with other dogs Chino may attempt to mount but responds well to correction and is more interested in play. He solicits and engages in bouncy, running play with a playful female. 12/13: Chino engages in pushy play with a playful female dog, with the ultimate intent to mount. 12/16: Chino engages in running play with playful female dogs. Chino becomes reactive to a dog in the adjacent pen and redirects, snapping at another dog standing close by.
