06/19/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: My heart stopped when I spotted Blue, initially called …..Buttercup and which mislead me to think he was a “returned” doggy-girl I used to love very much….Blue is in fact a boy, neutered, the way we like all pooches to be..He is absolutely gorgeous, tall, silver grey, welcoming in his kennel, making very sweet eyes, wagging his tail, a large smile adorning his face and dispensing kisses on my fingers. I knew right away he would soon be ” one of my boys”, here at the Manhattan Care Center. Blue is leashed 1,2,3 and off we go to the street. He pulls a little and does his business right away without marking. He gives me a hint that he likes other dogs, big and small, males or females and I could verify his good behavior in playgroups where is is very respectful of and playful with his peers. Free in a pen, he is a happy go lucky type of guy. He likes to stay close to me and mouths my hand gently, no teeth involved. He can sit on command, comes when called and loves treats. He runs after a ball, catches it, brings it back toward me and then drops it…He plays very nicely tag and does not get carried away when he has fun, something I appreciate very much. He loves to be caressed and scratched. I am totally in love with Blue, a big and handsome young man we have at the Manhattan Care Center. He is sociable, playful, affectionate, lively with measure, good with other dogs…He owns so many of the qualities we look for when comes the time to choose a forever best friend. Blue is waiting for his time to shine…in your loving hands.
06/17/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Blue was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, licked hands and face. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Blue follows the assessor with soft body language while playing tag. Blue was stiff and cannot be pushed out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. Blue kept a firm grip on the toy and his body was a bit stiff but he did not place his body between the toy and the rawhide and he did not growl, snap, or bite. Upon intake, Blue very energetic and had a soft wiggly body, a wagging tail, and gave kisses and lightly mouthed. Throughout the assessment he was energetic but very friendly toward the assessor, however, he repeatedly mouthed the assessor with no pressure applied. The Behavior Department recommends that Blue go to an experienced home that can work with him on obedience training to correct his mouthing and is prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. We also advise he be taught “drop it” and trade-up games, as he shows some potential to be possessive over food and toys. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, dog licks hands while lips are long. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog licks hand. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back, licks hand and leans body away. Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, his tail between his legs, ears are forward. His body is stiff. Dog does not lift his head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy 1: 2. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is a bit stiff. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-Dog: Blue is social, playful and respectful. He engages in rough play and is a social group greeter dog.
