12/04/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
12/04/15 10:02 Benji A1059553 is an 8 month old blue & white American Staffordshire/American Pitbull Terrier mix who was left with the finder two days ago and is being surrendered due to the finder not being able to keep him any longer mostly because their male dog doesn’t like Benji. Benji isn’t house broken. He eats dry & wet Pedigree dog food 2x a day, he pulls on the leash when walked and he’s been walked 1-2x a day. Benji slept on linen on the floor in the living room. According to the previous owner Benjie lived with children ages 1yr-14yrs old and was gentle & exuberant with them. He has the same behaviors with the 3 cats he previously lived with as well. The previous owner also stated Benji doesn’t like being left alone. He will bark nonstop until someone returns and or will be destructive (if he’s able to get into something, like chewing on items, or going into the garbage) in the home while being left alone. During intake Benji allowed all handling. He had a loose wiggly body & allowed to be scanned (-), collared & taken pictures of including positioning him during his photo session. Benji jumped right into the kennel on his own but once we left the room Benji began barking however once someone enters the room he’s quiet and wags his tail excitedly.
12/06/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Big, blue, bouncy, Benji!!! 8 month old Benji found himself homeless then briefly taken in by a good samaritan only to be surrendered to our care after 2 days because the resident male dog in the house was not a fan. Benji comes with glowing remarks having lived with both children and cats and playing well with both. He is very happy to see other dogs both male and female and kisses them sweetly through the gate. Being a big silly puppy, Benji will need his new family to teach him all things doggie 101: Housebreaking, leash manners, house rules etc. He’s got the looks, the friendly nature and the big heart now just needs the human commitment to complete the picture. Come meet Benji today!
12/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Benji came in as an owner surrender on 12/4/2015. It is reported he lived with children ages 1-14 as well as three cats and was gentle and playfully exuberant with them. It is reported Benji has destroyed household items when left alone in the home. During intake, Benji allowed all handling with loose, wiggly body. He pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. Benji came into SAFER assessment room with a lot of high energy and movement, jumping hard on assessor and assistant. He pulled out of assessor’s hands on all three Look attempts. Benji leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, open mouth panting, tail wagging, appearing to settle down from the handling/petting. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, but jumped up at end of game a bit overaroused, taking some time to settle down. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Benji playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with loose body, wagging tail. When off leash with other dogs Benji is exuberant and bouncy. He offers bows and engages in rough, running play with males and females. Due to his size and strength, the Behavior Team feels Benji would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. Older children should have an in-depth interaction before considering adoption. Benji would benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and focus, as well as not to jump up and crate training to avoid destruction in the home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, open mouth panting, wagging tail. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, jumps up hard at end of game and needs time to settle back down. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Toy 1: 1. Dog keeps a firm grip, body loose, tail wag. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Benji is exuberant and bouncy. He offers bows and engages in rough, running play with males and females.
12/05/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Benji engages in rough, bouncy play with males and females but when correction is offered he stiffens and growls. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center the Behavior department recommends Benji have a pre-adoption interaction before being placed into a home with another dog. When off leash with other dogs Benji is exuberant and bouncy. He offers bows and engages in rough, running play with males and females. 12/6: Benji is playful and bouncy. He may briefly display sexually motivated behavior when attempting to mount. 12/8 update: Benji attempts to solicit play, but when the other dog is not interested and offers correction he stiffens and growls. He does engage in rough play with a social, exuberant dog. 12/9 update: Benji engages in rough play with other playful dogs.
