09/12/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/12/15 10:17 Passerby found Austin wandering the street and attempted to follow them home. The person waived down the NYPD as they were on their way to work and did not want him to get hit by a car. Police stated that Austin was very social and was easily placed inside the carrier. Upon intake, he was soft bodied, wiggly, and took treats from the counsleor’s hand.
09/18/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Little Austin is at his best, free in a pen and in a one-on-one relationship with his caretaker. Austin loves people. He is still a baby with big paws and tender eyes. He is needy for attention, love and play. What a beauty he is, small, a little bit too thin, shepherd-like with his pointy ears and nose and such a magnificent model for the photographer, wearing a tie to perfection. He executes the sit command to a tee. Austin is literally dancing with his human, running, jumping kissing, hugging. He is so happy. His eyes are bright, his mouth is open. He so enjoys the moment. My heart says: I hope my little boy that there will be many more joyous times and for many more years to come… Austin pulls slightly on the leash and relaxes after having done his business. He is fine on the street meeting other dogs but a little bit shy in playgroups. He is young and needs to learn to socialize with his own kind. Lovely puppy Austin is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting and dreaming to be you little boy, you forever best friend.
09/15/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Austin pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment. Austin was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Austin ate faster, was stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away with a soft body language. Austin is an active dog he need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Austin may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address his possible food guarding behavior. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Lick hand Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. He does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. When off leash with other dogs, Austin does not approach to greet, but is tolerant of being greeted by a calmer female. He is uncomfortable with prolonged interaction and attempts to increase distance between himself and the other dog.
