PROFILE:
Basic Info: Shea A1051178 is a 5yr old neutered male Lhasa Apso/Shih Tzu mix canine who was given to the owner by the previous owner 5yrs ago and is being surrendered due to Shea not getting along with the children in the home. Shea was last at a vet in June 2015. He currently has no known health issues/injuries.
Socialization: Around strangers Shea is shy for a few minutes. He’s lived with children ages 12yrs &14yrs old. He plays/interacts with them sometimes. The owner stated he sometimes barks, growls, lunges & sometimes snaps at the kids when they’re running/playing around the home. With adults he’s gentle & exuberant. Shea hasn’t lived with any other animals. A little over a month ago Shea bit the 12yr old when they attempted to pet him while he slept. The bite did not break skin or make the child bleed.
Behavior: During storms/fireworks Shea will bark and hide. He isn’t bothered by the following: being moved off of furniture, being brushed or having his nails trimmed (all done at a groomers). He’s nervous when being restrained/held. Shea’s behaviors are unknown for the following: having his food/food bowl, toys/treats moved/touched. If he’s disturbed while sleeping/resting he’ll snap. If someone unfamiliar approaches the home or family member Shea will bark and or growl.
For a New Family to Know: Shea is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, mellow, excitable, independent, fearful, anxious & shy around strangers with a high activity level. The owner loves everything about Shea, “he’s a great dog”. When they are home Shea will follow them around. He enjoys his racoon toy and raw hide. He’s an indoor mostly dog who’s walked 3x a day where he doesn’t pull on the leash. Shea eats dry & wet Nature’s Receipe dog food 2x a day. He’s housebroken and will use wee wee pads. When left alone he’s well behaved and will sleep. His known commands are “sit” and “up” (for treats).
Intake Behavior: Initially Shea was nervous/fearful and tried to avoid interacting with me. After sweet talking him and spending some time with him he allowed me to scan (-), collar him and take his pictures. He didn’t resist being held, positioned for pictures or placed/removed from the kennel.
BEHAVIOR: EXP NO CHILD
On his relief walk, Shea continually tried to back out of his collar. He was stiff, fearful and did not show social behavior during the assessment and throughout handling. He remained stiff and fearful during tag and repeatedly tried to exit. He had no interest in food, toy or rawhide.
Shea was surrendered to the care center by his owner of 5 years due to conflicts with children in the home; upon intake, he was nervous/fearful and avoided interacting with staff initially, he eventually warmed up enough to allow all handling. Shea was described by his previous owners as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, mellow, excitable, independent, fearful, anxious & shy around strangers with a high activity level. Shea lived with 2 children age 12&14 years old and would play/interact with them at times but sometimes barks, growls, lunges & snaps at the kids when they’re running/playing around the home. Shea bit one of the children who attempted to pet him while he slept, but did not break skin. It is reported that he isn’t bothered when being moved off furniture but is nervous while being restrained or held and will snap if woken up from sleep. Throughout the assessment, Shea remained stiff and fearful; he took a lot of coaxing to approach the assessor between assessment items but allowed all handling. The Behavior Department recommends Shea be placed in an experienced home with no children based on Shea’s previous conflict with children in the home and his very fearful behavior throughout the assessment. We recommend that potential adopters be able to provide Shea with positive experiences and understand that introductions should be done slowly so that Shea is allowed to warm up to new people and environments at his own pace.
