04/17/15 17:34 Social Life and Personality: According to owner she has never been around children or cats so his behaviors are unknown. She is relaxed and playful around other dogs (lived with A1033512) and would play gentle to exuberant. She is not house trained, having accidents daily. She has a high level of energy. Behaviors: She has not bitten anyone or any animal before. When given a bath eh struggles getting into the tub, trying to run away but one in the water will sit and not be bothered by it. She is friendly when unfamiliar people approach the house or family member by having relaxed body and sniffing/licking them. New Family Info: She is used to slow walks on leash for exercise and does not play with toys. She has been crate trained using a large wire crate with plastic bottom but has not used it for a year. At home she followed owner around and loud noises such as fireworks or thunder do not affect him. She was fed dry food. Intake Behavior: During intake, approached extended hand and allowed to be scanned (negative), collared, pictured, and leashed without aggression. When touched had soft, wiggly body. When owner left would bark slightly and then sit by admission counselor’s side.
04/22/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Long of limb and fair of face, beautiful Astaire is just as energetic and graceful as her famous namesake but I doubt Fred ever smiled this brightly over the prospect of a game of fetch! She may love us humans (lots of kisses), adore other dogs (hello wigglebutt!) and thrill to the fun of getting out for a walk (big tail wags) but Astaire’s most favorite thing by far is her fuzzy little friend, the tennis ball. She chews it, she chases it, she brings it up on the bench and snuggles with it but the one thing she never does is guard it and once the ball finally drops to the ground I can pick it up with ease. Angling to get some on-the-bench snuggle pictures, I try focusing her attention by hiding the ball under my legs and poor Astaire is absolutely baffled – where did her toy go? She sniffs around, hops on and off the seat and scours every corner of the pen before I finally give in and bring it out again and the look of sheer joy on her face would be enough to melt even the hardest of hearts. Astaire previously lived in harmony with her doggie brother Humphrey (A1033513) and she’s very happy and well-mannered with all strangers, whether they walk on two legs or four. She comes when called, strolls calmly on leash, sits on command and naturally she received a perfect score (yes, perfect!) on her behavior assessment – what more could you ask? Astaire is now taking applications for new dance partners, so step on up and get ready to be swept off your feet!
04/19/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Astaire came in as an owner surrender with Humphry A1033512. She was loose and wiggly during intake. Astaire allowed all tactile handling during the SAFER assessment with low wagging tail. She followed at the end of leash during Tag but was more focused on other stimuli in the room, jumping up on the assessor during the second pass. For Squeeze item, Astaire jumped on the assessor lightly and needed to be reset. Before food item, Astaire jumped up gently on the observer. Astaire ceased eating and lifted her head out of the food bowl. She kept a firm grip on toy with loose, wiggly body, jumping up towards the assessor playfully. She had no interest in rawhide. During social time, Astaire was nervous with another dog she was unfamiliar with, but tolerated brief interactions even though she appeared uncomfortable. The Behavior Team feels Astaire would do well in an Average home. She may also benefit from obedience classes to redirect her jumping up behaviors. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, focused on other stimuli at the end. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Food 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push her out. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog to Dog: 1. Nervous, but tolerated brief interactions
