04/19/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes Alina acts like a little mouse in her kennel. She is scared of all those other dogs barking…She is not used to this…She is afraid to come out of her den but does eventually with a lot of coaxing. She crouches to the ground when the pooch next dog “yells” at her. Good, we made it to the yard. Alina relieves herself at once. She already looks more relaxed and even salutes with a gently wagging tail, a dog roaming in an adjacent pen. She is anxious , though, cries softly and paces making pictures taking a little difficult. Alina was found as a stray but we can very well see that she was a family dog just yesterday. She is very well nourished, beautifully groomed, healthy and knows her ways a round humans. I love how she jumps on the bench next to me and kisses my neck….She likes to mouth my hand gently to get my attention and can shake hand. If that is not a family dog….Alina is I bet quite different in a home setting. I see her being lively, interactive, sociable, friendly and quite affectionate. What could have happened? We will never know.. What we know for sure is that Alina needs a new home, a new master or family, a new life as a forever best friend this time. Alina is at the Manhattan Care Center.
04/19/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Alina came in as a stray on 4/17/2015. Upon initial exam she was shaking and hiding, but not growling or aggressive. Alina pulled a bit on leash when outside for her relief walk. She held gaze for three seconds during Look item. Alina appeared anxious throughout assessment, mostly panting and moderately pacing in between items. She maintained a low wag during all tactile assessment portions while accepting all touch. Alina was unresponsive during Tag and focused on other stimuli. She had no interest in food or rawhide. Alina did play briefly with the toy but relinquished it easily. During off leash social time, Alina was anxious and panting while with the other dog, not engaged in play. The Behavior Team feels Alina can be adopted to an Average home that understands she may need time to acclimate to a new environment. A predictable structure and routine might also aide in easing her anxiousness and help her to relax and feel comfortable in a new home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in low position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is panting. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog sniffs hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food. No interest. Toy 1. Dog will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide 1. No interest.
04/23/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Off leash with other male dogs, Alina shared a brief interaction but was very anxious. She appeared less anxious around a less interested male. Alina hasn’t had the opportunity to interact with another female. 4/29 Update Alina is not interested in play and wander the yard with another dog. 4/30 update: Alina continues to exhibit these behaviors while socializing with other dogs; she will greet well but does not interact anymore than that. 5/14 update: Alina has become more comfortable interacting with other dogs. She may initially be a bit forward but will calm down and interact appropriately once corrected.
