A shelter staff member writes: Zeus was adopted three years ago, but was surrendered to BACC earlier this month because his owner no longer had time to care for him. He’s a goofy guy with the best smile! Zeus has previously lived with a child, another dog, and a cat. He has been a superstar in play group, and is even used as a helper dog! Zeus can be a bit mouthy when he gets excited, so he may be too much for small children, but I’m sure he’ll make a great companion for an active family. Please help this loveable lug find a place to call home, and pull him from BACC today!
Owner Surrender Profile:
NAME: Zeus
REASON FOR SURRENDER – Personal
RELATIONSHIP – Zeus has been with the family for almost 3yrs.
PEOPLE – Zeus lived with 2 adults, 1 child
OTHER ANIMALS – Zeus lived with 1 other dog and 1 cat
PERSONALITY/HABITS – Zeus is reported to be good around children, relaxed and playful. He is receptive to other dog at home, and dogs he meets on leash and in the dog run but was kept separated from the cat he lived with because he can be mouthy but family reported that he is not reactive to the cat. He enjoys a bath and is good for handling. He likes to play fetch and chase with a ball. When the family is home he likes to be where they are and when alone he is well behaved. Zeus likes both wet and dry food.
MEDICAL – No apparent medical issues
BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE – Upon intake Zeus was very receptive to introduction and loose for all handling including scan for microchip (positive) and collar. Zeus was very receptive to petting and walked well on leash. Zeus stayed loose for all interactions.
Behavior: Experienced Home
SAFER:
Zeus previously lived with 2 adults, and 1 child, and according to the owner Zeus was reported to be relaxed and playful with children. Zeus also lived with another dog as well as a cat and was said to be receptive to the other dog at the home, and dogs he meets on leash and in the dog run, but was kept separated from the cat he lived with because he can be mouthy.
At intake it was noted that Zeus was very receptive to introduction and loose for all handling including collaring. He was also reported to be very receptive to petting and walked well on leash. During SAFER Zeus was sociable towards the assessor. He has a relaxed body posture during some of the handling, but became stiff and uncomfortable during paw handling, not allowing the assessor to assess a second time. He became over excitable during the tag interaction and did become a bit rough and mouthy, but was easy to calm down. He was also easy to handle when engaged with the resource items. When over aroused Zeus is a bit rough and mouthy, which may be too rough for smaller children, so the behavior Department feels Zeus would be best suited for an experienced adopter with no small children.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Becomes over aroused and a bit mouthy but was easily calmed down.
Squeeze 1: 4. Dog reaches toward the Assessor’s hand on the second attempt while moving his paw away when the Assessor attempts to lift it. The dog will not allow the Assessor to assess second time and consistently rolled over.
Flank squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all.
Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek.
Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog licks, then turns away.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Zeus engages in rough and rowdy play with a female. He is polite, respectful and tolerant when greeting and may have the potential to be a social helper dog.
Group Behavior: *Social Helper Dog*
