07/29/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Torino came to our center as an owner surrender. It is reported he lived with several children and adults and got along with everyone in the home, interacting in a gentle playful manner, however owner reports Torino is aggressive towards strangers. Owner reports Torino is selective and gets along with some dogs but not all, and has never been around cats. Owner describes Torino as excitable and playful with a high activity level. During intake, Torino was sitting in owner’s lap but when approached by staff he would stiffen and growl, therefore owner place Torino inside kennel. Inside kennel he cowered, whale eye and growling. Torino came into SAFER assessment area cowering and apprehensive, whale eye towards assistant handler, but appeared to slightly soften when assessor sat down, ears forward, body softening just slightly. When assessor approached too close, he froze, lip long, but did not growl. Due to the uncomfortableness with attempts at up close tactile handling the assessment moved forward to resources. Torino had no interest in Food or Rawhide, but did move forward to sniff Toy minimally, owner reports he is playful with toys in the home. He did not approach helper dog but was not aggressive. Torino must be placed with a New Hope partner. He appeared scared and shut down but did allow assessor to pet his head as he calmly stood next to assessor at the end of assessment. He needs time to warm up and acclimate in his new environment as he is frightened and confused without the security of his large family. Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog approaches and sniffs. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog, body neutral.
