Helper Dog:A0928010 Rocky lived with 4 adults and 3 other dogs. The owner states Rocky is receptive and loose to the other dogs in the house but can rough play with them and it can be overwhelming. It was also stated that when Rocky encounters cats in the streets he becomes aroused and should be kept away from them. it was mentioned that Rocky is housebroken, and enjoys a bath and will tolerate nail trim. It was also mentioned that Rocky will guard his food and treats but not his toys. At intake it was noted that Rocky was very cautious of the counselor so all handling was conducted by the owners. During SAFER Rocky was very social and attention seeking when interacting with the assessor. He allowed the assessor to conduct most handling items, but became stiff and growled during the tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment Rocky became stiff and snapped at the assess-a-hand when pushed out of the food bowl. He also became stiff and lip curled when the assessor attempted to remove the toys and rawhides, but did not escalate to growling or snapping. During the dog-dog interaction Rocky Rushed in quickly towards the helper dog, but his body was not stiff and he appeared to be interested in interacting. Due to the concerns seen on SAFER the department recommends placement with a New Hope partner who is able to provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification work to address the guarding behaviors seen on SAFER and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home.
