Around other dogs he will ignore them but owner stated if they get too close he will begin hard barking and his body will tense. He has lived with a cat and is described as relaxed and respectful around cats. Melo is mostly housetrained, he will have accidents in the home a few times a week. He has been kept only indoors and is described as having a medium activity level.

When strangers come into the home Melo will bark and growl, owner stated it takes time for him to warm up to strangers. Melo will growl when his food is touched while eating and will follow his food, owner stated his body is tense but his tail will wag. When given a bath he will struggle and attempt to flee. Owner did not trim his nails but stated he enjoys being brushed and is not bothered when he is held.
For a new family to know: Melo knows the command sit and is used to slow leashed walks twice a day. he will use the bathroom on grass, cement and pee pads. He enjoys squeaky and stuffed toys. Melo was crate trained when he was a puppy, and can do well for about an hour before he begins barking. He is well behaved when left alone and when home he tends to follow his owner around the home. He eats Gravy Train wet and dry food and is fed three times a day. He usually sleeps anywhere, on his own dog bed or in his owners, depends on his mood.
Upon intake Melo was fearful, his head was low, ears back and tail tucked. Counselor procceded slowly, was able to collar, scan (negative), and collar. Melo was receptive of treats.
SAFER: NEW HOPE ONLY
Melo previously lived with four adults and has had limited interactions with children. The owner stated Melo will bark and will not engage in play with the children. The owner mentioned Melo has lived with a cat and is described as relaxed and respectful around cat. It was reported by the owner Melo is house trained, crate trained and does well for about an hour, has a medium activity level and well behaved when home alone. The owner stated Melo will growl when his food is touched while eating.
At intake it was reported Melo was fearful with his head low and tail tucked, he allowed all handling with a slow approach. During SAFER Melo came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, he was a bit social towards the assessor, not all handling items were able to be conducted as Melo bared his teeth and growled at the assessor on the Look item. He displayed no interest in any of the resource items during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time.
Look: 5. Dog growls and bares teeth.
Toy 1: No interest.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Melo greets politely and may engage in play briegly. He becomes sexually motivated with some dogs.
PLAYGROUP:
When off leash with other dogs, Melo is tolerant of interaction but mostly keeps to himself. 12/23 update: Melo greets politely and may engage in play briegly. He becomes sexually motivated with some dogs.
