05/18/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I was asked to pay a visit to Luna, a scared little girl, only ten months of age who is with us as she was not living in harmony with two elderly resident small dogs and a cat. Her former owner says that she is absolutely perfect otherwise, very affectionate and loyal. Luna is gorgeous and has been beautifully cared for. She is really statuesque and borrows some of her features from the Boxer line. Such a girl in her looks and moves. Luna looks quite wary in her kennel but accepts my leash. She walks with her tail between her legs, sticks often her little tongue out and is rather hand shy. She is not thrilled by my treats until she smells from far away, some roast beef I brought inside the pen… Luna is now quite interested. She even sits in anticipation of a delicious meal, bright eyes and mouth open. I pet her now without problem. She is all mine. Now, let’s try a ball. I did not think that she would play like a pro, leaping for the ball, jumping so high to catch it and bring it back to me. We run through three open pens. We are having so much fun. One can never assume the worse. Luna is just like her owner said… lively, playful and quite friendly. Her face shifted 180 degrees from scared to silly and happy. Play therapy works for kids, works for dogs. Luna was ready at this point for a walk around the block. She pulls slightly on the leash and shows her housebreaking skills as stressed by her former master. She meets in a civil way two other large dogs and sits upon request at the red light. Luna is a young, very elegant, healthy and very playful girl we have at the Manhattan Care Center. An active new owner or family as well as a household without small critters would probably be the perfect match. Luna is a beauty and delightful. Do ask for her when you visit us.
05/18/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Luna was extremely fearful and repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler during the assessment, she was stiff and did not show social behavior during the assessment. She was very clearly uncomfortable being handled, she continually gave whale eye, took an ample amount of time if/when she was coaxed into position, and remained stiff during each item that was conducted. During tag, Luna followed at the end of the leash with a tense, fearful body and would crouch with a tucked tail after each pass. Luna bit the assess-a-hand during the food bowl test. She had minimal interest in the toy and froze then bared teeth with rawhide. Luna was surrendered to the care center by her owner of 8 months because she was not getting along with the two small dogs in the home. Her previous owner described Luna as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, pushy, excitable and high energy. Upon intake, Luna was tense and nervous with her tail tucked firmly and she did growl and lunge at male Counselor but was fine with female Counselor. During the assessment, Luna was very nervous and fearful. She did not approach the assessor easily and when tactile handling items were conducted she was tense and repeatedly gave whale eye. The Behavior Department believes Luna would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who will allow her to become acclimated to new people and environments at her own pace. She also guarded her food bowl and rawhide, escalating to a bite on the food; the New Hope partner should understand she may need positive behavioral modification for her guarding behaviors. Look: 3. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions, her body is tense and gives whale eye during each attempt. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is low, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Follows at end of leash, is fearful and crouches every pass, body tense. Flank squeeze1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Food 5. Dog bites the assess-a-hand. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Rawhide 4. Dog freezes and bares teeth. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs nervous, has tail tucked and licks her lips throughout interaction. She allows the helper dog to sniff her then walks away. When he approaches her face she curls her lip and offers a low growl.
