A Volunteer writes: This handsome elder statesmen sits shaking in his cage, which is all the sadder given that this is his second go-round at a shelter. His former owner, who had to surrender King due to being evicted, reports that he’s not wild about loud noise, and this is not exactly a quiet aerie. But once King can be talked out of his kennel, he is such nice company on a walk in the park. He just couldn’t be nicer. When I read his owner surrender notes that discussed a dog who could be, shall we say, grumpy at times, I thought I was reading about a different dog. King walks beautifully on a leash, he is house trained, he is gentle, and he is very kind to his walkers in the shelter. We sure would love to see him living out the rest of his noble life in a sweet, loving home. Another volunteer writes: Rescued five years ago from an abusive situation and now, relinquished to the care center at the ripe age of eight as his owners lost their home, does not make King feel very good….to say the least….This handsome gentleman of very mixed lineage has been beautifully cared for. The perfect weight, healthy looking and wearing an absolutely gorgeous coat, tiger brindle with dotted trimmings. His muzzle is greying but his eyes are two clear amber gems. King lived and played wonderfully well with the children of the house. He is said to be very playful, active, loving and very protective of his family. He would be fearful of strangers and get very nervous when his habits are disturbed. He would not be too friendly with dogs, cats and small critters.King is basically devoted to the ones he trusts and loves but seen his behavior with some of us who have dealt with him, I believe that King, properly introduced, can make friends with other people and who knows…dogs too. True, he is very nervous and unsure. He is out of place but as our encounter goes on, King starts to warm up to me, coming when I call him, accepting caresses and wagging his tail. He is very much housetrained, and doing his business outside his kennel relieves some tension too. King walks quite well on the leash, does not mark his territory and does not show any kind of ill reaction toward other dogs met. Who is the real King ? King has certainly become dear to those who met him and we are hoping that he will be given the chance to show how loving and loyal he is ..in experienced hands. King is at the Manhattan Care Center.
