12/19/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Gorgeous in his light tan coat with pale green eyes, Adidas joins us as an “owner surrender”. We’re told he’s friendly and outgoing with strangers, is housetrained, knows ‘sit’ and ‘come’ and doesn’t display any resource-guarding when at home. Adidas wagged his tail at me when I came to leash him, hopped right out of his kennel and out we went. He pulls hard on the leash so will benefit from some leash training. He’s very focused on everything going on around him and doesn’t miss a thing: Bag blowing on the street? hey — pay attention! Dog walking down the block? Let’s stop and watch! Person coming towards us? OK — let’s look! Adidas may have a strong prey drive, so no small dogs, cats or other critters in his new home please. Adidas didn’t mind being tethered for some photos, took treats gently and made sure he was aware of everything going on around us. He’s a great looking nice dog with a strong personality whose ideal person will have a personality to match and be ready to provide any training necessary.
12/18/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Adidas has shown a tendency to fixate on small dogs and is extremely difficult to distract. When they pass his kennel, Adidas becomes frantic. We cannot be certain of the motivation, but due to this fixated behavior we caution against a home with small dogs or other small animals, or where he may come in contact with them. 12/18 SAFER Adidas came into our center as an owner surrender. Owner reports Adidas has not lived with or spent any time around children, but plays gently with adults. Behavior around cats is unknown. Owner reports Adidas is not bothered if anyone touches his food, toys, or treats. It is reported Adidas likes to sleep in his kennel, not reported whether door was open or closed, and that he is housetrained. Owner says when home alone Adidas may destroy household items. During intake, Adidas allowed all handling. He pulled on leash for his relief walk. Adidas allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, tail wagging, body relaxed. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, focused on other stimuli by sniffing and teeth chattering, ears back, body neutral. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft. He gently pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Adidas showed no interest in Toy, but this may be due to the environment as owner reports he is playful and especially enjoys rope toys. When off leash with other dogs, Adidas displays sexually motivated behaviors and attempts to mount the female greeter. The Behavior Team feels Adidas would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have very young children. Any older children should have an in depth interaction before considering adoption. Adidas may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and continue crate training so he can relax when left alone in the home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is focused on other stimuli available, sniffing and teeth chattering. His body is soft, ears back. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 / 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Adidas displays sexually motivated behaviors and attempts to mount the female greeter.
