05/09/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: How I’d love to spend my day counting the freckles on Zucc’s face! So cute! So wiggle butt when I approached his kennel, in Zucc’s mind I was clearly the best thing since dog biscuits! He needed to go out to go potty and there I was :). Although he pulls a bit on the leash, he’s compact and easy to manage, and some of the pulling was simply his happiness at being out for a walk on a warm spring afternoon. Greeting other dogs we passed in the park with an appropriate tail wag, in group play off leash he’s playful and will sometimes jump in an attempt to engage. Well groomed and a good weight for his size his tail wags, his eyes twinkle, and when I show him a squeaky toy he’s thrilled to play. Every time he picked it up and it squeaked he seemed surprised at the sound, looking up and around as if wondering where that noise came from. He bats it around, gives it a good shake, and then lays down with it between his paws, looking pretty satisfied with himself. Joining me on the bench for a snuggle he’s affectionate in a quiet and respectful way. Acing his behavior assessment indicates he’ll be a good fit in just about any home, so don’t wait too long before you come meet his sweet boy. Everything is better with a friend, and he’s ready to be yours.
05/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Zucc was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – jumps up to greet the Assessor, soft body, low wag. He was easy to handle and position throughout the assessment and his body remained soft. During tag, he followed the Assessor at the end of the leash with soft body language. It took a bit of pressure to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. He engaged in play with the toy but allowed it to be relinquished to the Assessor and only had minimal interest in the rawhide. Zucc came to the care center as a stray. When off leash with other dogs Zucc was playful. Throughout the assessment he remained friendly toward the Assessor. The Behavior Department believes Zucc can go to an average home. We also believe he may benefit from obedience classes to help correct his habit of jumping up to greet people and pulling on the leash. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail neutral, body soft. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog engages in play with the toy, will relinquish toy to you. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs Zucc is very playful. He is mouthy and will jump and run in attempts to engage the other dog in play.
