05/22/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Dapper dog alert! I don’t put a bow tie on just any pup but there was something about handsome Zigzag that told me he’d be worthy of the honor and now that we’ve had our first date, I can say with confidence that he absolutely proved me right. Whether he’s wearing his signature proud-frowny expression or breaking into an elusive (but even cuter) play grin, on the inside Zigzag is always smiling and eager to hang out and have fun with his friends. Energetic but never hyper, he enjoys running around and playing with a ball, likes a good back rub and greets other dogs with amiable good manners but what he loves more than anything is food. Many dogs will reject ‘lesser treats’ but not Zigzag, he’s a boy after my own heart and the minute he sees a snack of any kind in my hand he stops still, gives me the World’s Saddest Pleading Face and waits patiently for his reward which he’ll then take ever so softly into his mouth. On leash he’s a good walker, keen to sniff, quick to take care of business and very responsive to my voice and his tail wags high and happy as we make our way down the street. Zigzag performed well on his behavior evaluation and though he was sooo excited he just couldn’t keep all four paws on the ground, his scores for everything from paw handling to food and toy sharing are great. When they brought in the ‘helper dog’ to test his attitude toward fellow canines Zigzag was a total star, smiling and even play-bowing for his new friend like they were long-lost BFFs. If you’re looking for a bestie of your own it’s definitely time for you (and any four-legged ‘kids’ you might have – the more the merrier!) to hurry in to our Manhattan Care Center. Ask to meet Zigzag, the dapper gent with a heart of gold, and get ready to step out in style!
05/22/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Zigzag pulls a bit on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Zigzag was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He was a bit mouthy (light) during the paw item. Zigzag did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Zigzag approached other dog with friendly/playful body language. Zigzag still a young and active dog and will likely need considerable exercise and mental stimulation. However, no concerning behavior was seen during the SAFER assessment. We feel his behavior is appropriate for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy: 1. No interest Rawhide: 1. No interest Dog-dog: 1. Dog approaches the helper dog in play position. His mouth is open. Helper:A1037024
