A volunteer writes: I’m not one for hot weather, and while I recently found myself wishing for winter, the universe took some creative liberties and instead brought me something much better, Winter the dog! She is painted like a cow, her underbite is lined in black (and couldn’t be more precious), and her kind eyes are crowned with white lashes. She was a bit timid when she first arrived. On our first walk a noise in wind could make her stop dead in her tracks and look up as if Chicken Little was whispering in her ear. As I coaxed her back into the building, a staff member remarked that he had to carry her in the previous day! Though she was shy, with some cooing she would approach with a low waggy tail, take treats, and bury her head in my lap. Winter has become much more brave and continues to be as sweet as pie! She walks very nicely on leash, but sometimes can’t help but add a modest little joyful bounce to her gait when we first get outside. She wags her tail throughout and is very attentive. She seems housebroken and whenever we’ve encountered other dogs she seems interested and friendly – she’s even been used to help integrate other dogs into playgroup! Her previous owner reports that she loves fetch, is very tolerant of children, and is well behaved when left alone. From the moment I approach her cage (and she does an adorable little grunty moaning sound) to long after we’ve parted ways, I can’t help but think about how smitten I am with Winter! She is already spayed and ready to be your girl for all seasons – please come meet her at Brooklyn ACC!

Behavior: Experience
Winter previously lived with 2 adults and the owner stated Winter has been exposed to children and is reported to be very tolerant of them. It was mentioned by the owner Winter understands the command sit and plays fetch. Owners stated Winter is house broken and when home alone she is well behaved.
It was reported Winter had loose body posture and allowed all handling upon intake. During SAFER Winter came into the assessment room shy and a bit fearful, she warmed up to the assessor when needed coaxing to approach, allowed all handling items to be conducted. Winter was fearful and unresponsive during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Winter was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Winter has been showing fearful behavior. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Winter be given the opportunity to interact at her own pace. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Winter is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. The behavior department feels she can be suitable for an “experience” adopter.
