08/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “It’s elementary my dear Watson” is the very first thought in my mind when I meet Watson – who is looking for his Sherlock Holmes, of course! He’s gorgeous in his lush tan coat with white socks on his front feet, and one toe of white on each of his back feet. So interesting! He smiles, wags his tail, makes soft eye contact, and his flip over ears perfectly frame his friendly face. In group play he’s good with both males and females and has an energetic play style. I just met him after group play, so he was content to lay at my feet, give me kisses and a big hunky smile. He’s young with a nice energy so his ideal Sherlock should lead an active lifestyle and maybe have a resident dog for him to play with. Watson showed a bit of guarding over his food, and while this may or may not exist once in a home, his new person should be aware of this possibility. Like his namesake, Watson is ready to be your friend, assistant, and constant companion and who could be better than this handsome hunk! Ask to meet him today.
07/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Watson came to us as a stray on 7/23/15. Upon intake it was reported that Watson had soft body language and allowed all handling. Watson displayed very high energy during the SAFER and was hard to position for some of the tactile assessment items. He allowed the assessor to perform all handling without displaying any signs of aggression, but did jump on the assessor very strongly in between some of the items. Watson ate faster, was stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He only displayed minimal interest in the toy and rawhide items on this portion of the assessment. The behavior department believes that Watson can go to an experience home with no children due to his hyperactive behavior and poor body awareness. A potential adopter should be prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. In addition, due Watson’s potential for possessive behavior over food he may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address this food guarding behavior in a home environment as we cannot be certain this behavior will not manifest in a home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, and open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. He indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog becomes a bit over aroused and jumps on assessor very strongly. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. He does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away. Rawhide1: Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs Watson is jumpy and will engage in running play when solicited. He is more interested in seeking attention from handlers.
