10/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Vivian is such a perfect little bundle. She seems made of playdough molded in to the cutest small gal. She wears a well groomed chocolate dress and reminds me of a shiny autumn chesnut. I love her shiny beady brown nails. Golden button eyes make the picture perfect…Like most of her housemates, Vivian waits at her door, mostly always calmly and hoping for a walk and company. She seems unsure walking though the halls and the backyard, wondering may be what is going to be next. Free in a pen, she seems more comfortable and checks briefly without upset or sustained interest dogs present in the adjacent runs. She loves treats, jumps for them and rarely sits. Although quite young, Vivian has been a mother a few times. I guess it was her “job” in her former home. She knows what a ball is and will run after it, catch it and even let us take it out of her mouth. She enjoys laying flat on the ground and savours delicately the ball in her mouth. Vivian is happy to see the staff who takes daily care of her. She runs to the gate, wags her tail and welcomes them. They are right now her family she feels safe with and loved by. She briefly comes on the lap of her caretaker, gives a peck and then leaves. Something is holding her..Will she ever trust us, humans? Vivian has not exactly been a posh pet in her former “home”. She lived with many other dogs and was bred and bred…Judging by the few scars on her legs and face, she might have gotten into squabbles with some of her housemates. Even here, Vivian had an argument with Clarissa …Vivian , like Roger and Clarissa needs our help. She has been housed for 3 long months at the Manhattan Care Center, her spirits kept afloat by her dedicated caretakers. Vivian will need help as far as trust and socialization with other dogs are concerned. Will you be the one giving her the chance to feel safe, respected , loved and return love like a “real pet”. Vivian is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming of a better life.
09/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Vivian has been in ACC’s care since June. She has been social and interactive with her human caretakers but has shown moderate concerns with other dogs. She has been evaluated twice: a SAFER in June and a more thorough evaluation in September. September assessment summary: Vivian is a sensitive dog. She has moderate scarring on her legs and face. She was neutral in the kennel, but a bit fearful on leash – crouching and flinching in the hallway and when touched. She was distracted when off-leash in the room, but came over when called by tester. She played tug with the toy and was fearful of tester during tag. She shook off frequently during the evaluation. She was not interested in the food and did not guard a pig’s ear. She lay down on the ground when toddler doll approached and leaned away when hugged. She lay down and flinched when scolded. When assessor switched to friendly behavior, she wagged her tail but stayed lying down. She greeted both the female and male helper dogs with a high tail and hackles. She became playful with the female dog, and offered appropriate corrections. She mounted both of them repeatedly. While at ACC, Vivian retaliated when another dog corrected her. The other dog received puncture wounds. Due to the scarring on her body and known history with dogs in the shelter, we strongly recommend further testing with dogs, a behavior modification program , and safety tools in order to keep Vivian and those around her safe. 6/20 SAFER scores: Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 1. No interest. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Rawhide 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. she does not place her body between you and the rawhide. Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful. Helper: A1039524
08/27/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
