A volunteer writes: Tyson is a dog, I would never have been able to part from, had he be mine…He is the sweetest old man on earth…I love his gentle smile, his greying muzzle and his dreamy brown eyes that give him the most charming and innocent face. It is hard to believe that Tyson is 12, yes, 12 years of age. He is in an outstanding shape, the perfect weight and wears a gorgeous and silky coat with elegant markings in various shades of brown. His manners are gentle, homy , comfy, poised and he walks beautifully on the leash, relieving himself as soon as he is out in the open. He enjoys his stroll around the block, in sync with his caretaker. Free in a pen, he sticks around me and if he wanders, comes back “on the double”, a big smile on his face and tail wagging if I call him.He loves being petted and poses his head right in my lap for caresses. Tyson is an amazing sweetheart.. He seems to have such a peaceful and clement outlook on life. In playgroup with other dogs, he observes the scene, all relaxed and content. Tyson loves company…Tyson is an old dog with good genes and who has been outstandingly cared for. He was a family dog, well behaved, loving, playful, house trained and good with children, strangers , dogs and ..cats… Many elderly pets are overlooked in shelters, even if they are healthy, still lively and well tempered. Please, do see through the “grey”. A loyal and still valiant heart is still beating in Tyson’s chest and ready to share you joys and sorrows. Tyson is waiting for you. at the Manhattan Care Center.
Profile: 07/31/15 16:08hrs
Tyson is a neutered 12 year old pit bull. He was cared for by his owner his whole life but is being surrendered due to family changes that prevents the owner for caring for him fully.
SOCIAL LIFE & PERSONALITY- Tyson is described as a well behaved playful and friendly dog. He enjoys being petted. He lived with a teenager and two adults. Tyson interacted well the people in his home. He was kept only indoors. He has interacted with cats in the home. He was respectful of the cats in the home. His owner stated that he played well with other dogs too.
BEHAVIOR- Tyson was accustomed to being walked twice a day. He would spend up to 11 hours in the home by his self. His owner stated that Tyson was allowed access to most rooms in the house during the day because he would suffer from anxiety when left in a small space for too long. Tyson was bathed every few months. He would bark at the sound of someone knocking at the door but was friendly towards visitors.
FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW -Tyson is a well behaved dog. He knows the command “sit.” He was accustomed to slow walks on his leash. He played with toy balls in the home. He was fed wet dog food mixed with rice or other human food. Tyson would sleep in his dog bed at night.
DURING INTAKE-Tyson approached the Admissions Counselors with a wagging tail and wiggly body. He allowed collaring, scanning for a microchip (negative) and taking photographs.
Behavior:
Tyson was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. He began to whine a bit but once handling began he was relaxed and calm. He engages in play, loose body, wags tail, mouth is open, and jumps up on the assessor while trying to mouth the leash. Tyson had no interest in food, tail or rawhide.
Tyson was surrendered to the care center by his owner of 12 years due to personal problems; upon intake he had a wagging tail and wiggly body allowing for all handling to be conducted. He was described by his owner as being a well behaved, playful, and friendly dog. He lived with adults and one teenager, interacting well with all. He also lived with a cat that he was respectful of and he interacted well with other dogs. It is reported that Tyson was allowed access to most rooms in the home when left alone, as he would get anxious when confined to small areas. Tyson was slightly anxious and whined repeatedly but remained friendly towards the assessor with a soft body and wagging tail throughout the interaction. The Behavior Department feels Tyson can go to an average home.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog is panting.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins and attempts to mouth the leash.
Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed.
Food: No interest
Toy 1: No interest.
Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away.
