05/25/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Tyson was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, tries to stay close. He allowed for all handling to be completed with no signs of aggression. He was distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag interaction. Tyson growled and tried to bite the assess-a-hand during the food bowl test, then continued guarding the food after the assessor moved away. He growled and snapped at the assess-a-hand when the assessor reached for the toy. The rawhide portion of the assessment was not conducted due to the severity of Tyson’s reactions to food and toy; we did not want the behavior to become practiced or to escalate. Tyson was brought to the care center as a stray. Upon intake, he was very hyper on leash but was hesitant of new people and bared teeth when first approached. During the handling portion of the assessment, Tyson did jump up on the assessor and displayed a fair amount of energy but allowed for all handling. Tyson’s reaction to the assess-a-hand reaching into his bowl and for the toy were very concerning and immediately escalated to an attempt to bite, for that reason we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. He may also benefit from being given time to acclimate to new people and environments at his own pace. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Food: 5. Dog tries to bite. Toy 1: 5. Dog attempts to bite. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail low wag, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral.
