08/07/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I saw Tricycle in the lobby, waiting to be admitted, and it was love at first sight! The woman that brought him in validated my feelings by gushing about how sweet he was with her. He has the mushiest face and looks like he hasn’t yet grown into his paws (and he has the most adorable way of tucking them under his body when he is lying down in his cage). Tricycle has been shy and timid since his arrival, but with the right approach he shows glimpses of the carefree puppy that might be hiding behind those nerves! He is very food motivated, and treats go a long way in gaining his trust. When I have him off leash, after a while he hops up next to me on the bench and even starts to climb into my lap. He lets me pet him all over and even wags his tail. He’s very aware of all the noises and goings on around him, but still checks in with me often. He seems to have housetraining and walks nicely on leash. On our way back in we encounter a staff member that comments on how scared he is, and is then pleasantly surprised when Tricycle props his paws on her, and is not only brave, but cuddly too! When we start to head down the row of his cage, he lies down in protest. With some treats and coaxing he hops right in, and as soon as I close the door he props his paws on it, wrinkles his brow as he looks at me, and wags his tail! I think he’s trying to tell me that next time he makes someone fall in love at first sight with him, he hopes it is someone that will welcome him into their home! Brooklyn ACC is no place for this sweet, timid boy, but maybe your place is — please come give him the chance he deserves!
08/04/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog:A1045636 Tricycle came into the care center as a stray, so we do not have any information on his past behaviors in a home. At intake it was noted that Tricycle maintained a fearful body posture, but he allowed all handling. During SAFER Tricycle was fearful when entering the assessment room, and was hesitant to approach the assessor. When given the opportunity to approach at his own pace, he allowed the assessor to easily collar him, and also allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. During the tag interaction, Tricycle became fearful, and quickly turned towards the touch, but did not escalate to growling or snapping. During the resources portion of the assessment Tricycle was stiff and did not lift his head when pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in the toys, and when engaged with the rawhides, his body was stiff and would not relinquish the item to the assessor. During the dog-dog interaction Tricycle rushed in towards the helper dog with soft body language and appeared to be interested in interacting. Tricycle can be fearful of new situations, so the department recommends that introductions are done slowly. Tricycle also displayed some concerns on the food and rawhide items, and may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address the potential possessive behaviors seen. The department feels Tricycle would be best suited for an experienced adopter with no children. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag 3 . Dog repeatedly spins toward the touch, Dog is crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff. Squeeze 1&2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, his tail between his legs, ears are forward. His body is stiff. Dog does not lift his head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.
08/06/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Tricycle is social, engaging in bouncy running play. He is tolerant of a pushy female and is a potential group greeter dog. 8/7 update: Tricycle is initially uncomfortable but warms up and becomes playful. He engages in rough play with an energetic female. He may attempt to mount but responds well to correction. 8/8 update: Tricycle continues to need time to become comfortable when interacting. He will then engage in rough play and become sexually motivated but responds well to correction.
