08/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Surrendered by his owner when they lost their home, Tortas is confused about his upside down world. Eagerly waiting at the front of his kennel, he’s unsure of who his friends are and greets all with both a tail wag and a low growl. As soon as I give him a treat after opening his door he knows I’m a friend, I leash him and out we go. Handsome in his orange coat, off leash in a pen he’s bouncy and playful running after a tossed toy. Wagging his tail at other dogs who pass by he’s clearly interested in all. He comes when called, takes treats so gently with the edge of his teeth, but then spits them out when not to his liking. Easy at intake as he was still with his person, he now knows he is alone so is careful about making new friends. He eventually came to me for petting, but it took some time to get there. Tortas will need a slow and easy approach until he feels safe and it will take an experienced person who understands his need to be left alone until he’s ready.
08/01/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Tortas walks calmly on leash. He may be house trained – toileted immediately when taken outside. Tortas was stiff and did not show social behavior during the assessment. He was uncomfortable with handling (growling loudly) we decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources ate faster, was stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. Tortas was not interested in toys or rawhide. He approaches the helper dog with his tail at spine level, body not stiff and lip long. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 5. Dog freezes and growls Food: 5. Dog tries to bite. Toy: 4 Dog growls and snap Rawhide: 4. Dog growls and snap. Dog-dog: 2.
