I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 08/18/2015 from NY 10002, owner surrender reason stated was TOO STRONG.

08/18/15 10:15 Basic Info: Toby is an 11 year old neutered dog who has no known injuries or medical problems. He was originally gotten through a friend and was surrendered to the shelter due to time constraints and personal issues with the owner. Social life and Personality: According to owner he is aggressive towards children where he will become stiff bodied and will bark and lunge at them. He has the same behavior with both dogs and cats. He is house trained, kept mostly indoors, and has a low level of energy. Behavior: He has a history of biting people but no bite has ever broken skin according to the owner. When owner tried to take food, treats, bones, or rawhides he would bark, growl, snap, and bite. He was not bothered when given a bath or having his fur brushed. When unfamiliar people approach the house or family member he will become stiff bodied and bark at them. New Family Info: He knows the commands sit and give paw. He is used to slow walks on leash and when off leash will run away and is very difficult to catch. He has not been crate trained and does not play with toys anymore. At home he stays in a favorite spot and will be well behaved when left home alone. He is terrified and will panic by loud noises such as fireworks and thunder. He was fed both wet and dry food. Intake Behavior; During intake allowed owner to scan and collar him. When admission counselor would extend hand or approach he would become stiff bodied and would bark. After owner left he would slowly approach admission counselor and sniff but when hand was extended he would retreat and bark.

Toby came to our center as an owner surrender on 8/18/2015. It is reported that Toby will bark and lunge at children, strangers, dogs, and cats, stiff body. Owner states Toby will bark, growl, snap and bite if anyone goes near his food, treats, bones, or rawhide. Owner reports he is very frightened of loud noises such as fireworks and thunder. During intake, Toby would bark with stiff body at admissions counselor that attempted to approach, owner had to collar. After owner left Toby would slowly approach admissions counselor and sniff but when hand was extended he would retreat and bark. Toby walked nicely on leash for his relief walk, no pulling. He calmly entered the SAFER assessment room and displayed none of the behaviors previously reported by owner. Toby allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body neutral, panting. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body neutral. Toby followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, unresponsive to the touch at each pass, settling easily at end. He did not pull his paw back during both Squeeze attempts. Toby calmly allowed Food bowl to be moved away, and lifted his head when assess-a-hand was softly applied to his cheek. He had minimal interest in Toy and Rawhide, sniffing/licking before turning away. When off leash with other dogs, Toby greets politely and is interested but does not engage in play. Based on Owner Surrender Profile, it would be best for Toby to be placed with a New Hope partner. He may benefit from a calm, quiet, structured environment where he knows what to expect and can relax in his new surroundings. Look: 1 Eyes are averted, ears are back, elaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1 Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2 Follows at the end of the leash, but is unresponsive to the Assessor at each pass. Squeeze 1/ 2: 1 Does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Food 1 Calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish,does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against her cheek. Toy: 1 Minimal interest Rawhide: 1 Minimal interest dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Toby greets politely and is interested but does not engage in play.
