10/31/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
TJ Max came to us as a stray on 10/22/15. She was very interested in interacting with the handler when taken out of her kennel and walked calmly on the leash. When entering the behavior room TJ Max displayed this same behavior with the assessor though she was a bit shy. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining soft body language. TJ Max a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. She proved easy to handle when chewing on the toy and rawhide items on this portion of the assessment. The behavior team believes that TJ Max can go home with an adopter that has an average amount of dog experience. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. He indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body soft. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Tj Max greets the helper dog politely then becomes uncomfortable when play is solicited and offers correction.
10/23/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Tj Max greets other dogs politely but does not seem interested in play and may become uncomfortable when play is solicited. He has shown some guarding behavior and recently was quick to escalate when spooked by a noise. Based on his behavior during playgroup, the Behavior Department recommends that Tj Max should not go to a home with another dog at this time. He may need time to decompress outside of the care center environment before he is able to properly socialize with other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Tj Max greets the helper dog politely then becomes uncomfortable when play is solicited and offers correction. 10/29 update: Tj Max greets the other dogs politely before moving off to explore his surroundings. He hard barks at another male dog through the fence so they are not introduced. 10/31, 11/1 update: Tj Max is social and greets other dogs politely. 11/02 update: TJ Max greeted the helper dog appropriately and engaged in brief bouncy play, however he turned up within seconds, chest bumping and mounting the helper dog. He then redirected and displaced his arousal to his leash. When handler attempted to move him from the pen he growled and tugged at the leash. He was allowed time to calm down before being removed from the yard. 11/03 update: Tj Max immediately began to guard his leash when approached by the other dog. He eventually greeted the other dog but was stiff and escalated when spooked by a noise. He was slow to de-escalate and had to be separated from the other dog by the handlers.
