11/14/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: With his two toned nose, stunning hazel eyes, and gorgeous markings, Thor is one handsome pup. Named after a fictional superhero in Marvel comics, our Thor is looking to achieve superhero status as well, and is well on his way! Thor can check the following off his superhero ‘to do’ list: housetrained, fun and friendly, wiggle butt with his human friends, play bows to small dogs in an adjoining pen, social and friendly during intake, rough and bouncy play with dogs in playgroup, comes when called, likes to cuddle, nice leash manners, and that’s just for starters! Thor is alert, curious, fun, friendly and has a lively personality. He loves to check out everything going on around him, from another dog passing by to someone pulling the hose in front of the pen. A bit too thin in my opinion, he nevertheless has a soft lush coat which invites you to run your hands over it. He bounces after a tossed ball but doesn’t retrieve, more interested in coming back for another snuggle and a quick look at any new activity. Thor’s soft energy is looking for an active, fun family with whom to cuddle, play and go for nice long walks. If you fit that description, Thor cordially invites you to stop by and meet him today!
11/15/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Thor came into our center after a member of the public found him as a stray. During intake, he displayed a soft body and wagging tail. He allowed all handling but would jump up playfully if approached by people. He responded to the command “sit” to redirect. Thor pulled a bit on leash for his relief walk. He was friendly, loose and wiggly when entering the SAFER assessment room, jumping up playfully on assessor at beginning of assessment. He was difficult to position for Look item-displacement scratching, pulling out of assessor’s hands- but allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands with eyes averted once positioned. Thor stood still and accepted the touch for Sensitivity item, body soft, focused on other stimuli and sniffing assessor’s shoes. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, settling easily at end. Thor gently pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, mouthing assessor’s hand with no pressure, displacement scratching at end of item. He playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with loose, wiggly body and wagging tail. When off leash with other dogs, Thor engages in rough, bouncy play. The Behavior Team feels Thor would do well in an Average home. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners as well as not to jump up and mouth. Thor may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is active and focused on other stimuli available. His body is soft, accepts touch. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog gently pulls back paw, places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Thor engages in rough, bouncy play.
11/13/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Thor engages in energetic, rough play with other playful females. Thor is unaltered and has made some attempts to mount other dogs during interaction. The behavior department recommends that Thor may be placed into a home with a playful, female dog. He has not yet been introduced to a male dog during off-leash playtime, so a pre-adoption interaction is recommended. Thor arrived at our care center as a stray, so his in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. When off leash with other dogs, Thor engages in rough, bouncy play. He solicits attention and is playful but then engages in sexually motivated behavior. 11/14 update: Thor engages in rough, bouncy play with a social female. When play ceases he attempts to mount but responds well to correction. 11/15: Thor engages in exuberant play with another playful dog.
