04/23/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: He’s short and squat, his coat is a little shabby, and he is sweeter than his name implies….it’s Taffy! When I first met him, he was friendly when I opened his cage, but once he took the step down Taffy looked like a deer in headlights! I’m not sure if it was the other dogs barking, or if he was just overwhelmed by his situation in general, but little Taffy wasn’t moving. Luckily he’s small enough (and trusting enough!) to pick up. I carried him to the hallway where there was much less commotion, and even after lots of cooing and treats, Taffy stayed right where I had set him down! So, he took one more ride in my arms and we made it outside where he proved to be much more mobile! Taffy is much braver now and loves to go outside on walks. He walks nicely on leash and sometimes even pokes his head between my knees! He stays so close that one time I nearly tripped on him, which of course was a little scary for Taffy, but he recovered quickly and softly wagged his tail and made his way to my lap. He seems housebroken and I’m told he really comes out of his shell when playing with other dogs! Though he is still a little shy and timid, even with people he warms up to be playful and affectionate; he pounces after tennis balls (but doesn’t pick them up just yet) and when I sit down is quick to join me on the bench. Taffy has such a soft personality and is as cute as can be — he’s stolen my heart, please come meet him at Brooklyn ACC!
04/16/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Taffy came in as a stray surrender, so his past behavior in a home is unknown. At intake it was noted that Taffy was very nervous and trembling, but he allowed all handling and was easily collared by an admissions counselor. During SAFER Taffy was a bit shy, but was still sociable towards the assessor. He was a bit tense and fearful during the handling and tag interaction, but he allowed the assessor to conduct all items without issue. Taffy was easily pushed out of the food bowl during the food item, and was also easy to handle when engaged with the toys and rawhide items. Taffy is sociable and becomes very playful when given time to warm up, so the department feels Taffy can be suitable for an “Average” experienced adopter. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip licks. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog smells, then turns away. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Taffy is initially nervous with tucked tail but warms up and starts to solicit play with bounces and engages in some running play. He is social and friendly.
