A volunteer writes: Swan.. What a lovely dog ! Said to be a young adult but so carefree like a puppy, expecting the best of every situation she finds herself in..Meeting people, other pooches, strolling in the street or playing in the yard..She even looks happy in her kennel….Her face is full of hope and expectation. Such a great smile and bright eyes ! I would love to wake up to such a pooch every day of the year, gloomy or sunny one.Swan might be puppy like but  she is well mannered and poised. She walks beautifully on the leash, does her business while out, comes when called, sits on command, takes food gently from my hand , play bows graciously to other dogs and is an amazing lap dog. She is petite, healthy, shiny like a black diamond and as girly and pretty as can be. Swan is a great choice for a first time family pet(but also for veteran petowners). She aced her behavioral evaluation and could fit in any home setting. Come and meet Swan at the Manhattan Care Center . Take her home as your forever best friend. She is a true gem.

Oct 2015
A volunteer updates:   Lush and gleaming in her gorgeously black coat, Isa is ready for a walk and goes potty the moment we’re out the door. Adopted a few months ago and just returned, we’re told that she lived with a 2 and 7 yo and allowed all petting and handling by family members.   Concerned as she would pull towards other people and dogs on the street they returned her.   As I walked her to the park and back she did pull and bark at other dogs simply showing bad manners in her desire to meet them.   Isa has been in group play with other dogs and is social, greets others well and engages in “rough and rowdy” play.  Showing off her ‘sit’ in exchange for a treat which she gently takes, she also sits waiting for me to throw a ball which she fetches perfectly and returns to me for another throw.  She’ll also nose the ball around herself, happy to amuse herself and then crawls under the
bench for a few moments to rest with her ball.  Isa is playful, friendly and enthusiastic in everything she does.   She’s looking for an experienced person or family to join, and hopes that she doesn’t have to wait long.   Ask to meet her today.

A volunteer writes:

What a beauty Isa has become….She was already a gorgeous young lady when I met her 2-3 months ago but now, she is all grown up with a full body and a lush and lustrous  ebony coat. She has been so well cared for but seems  strangely so much more grown up than barely few months ago….She is the same playful gal who knows that she needs to share the ball to play a good game. She comes when called, sits perfectly on command and for treats , walks nicely  on the leash and does her business as soon as we leave the facility. She is energetic but not hyper. She likes to be caressed. She enjoys her peers in playgroups and runs rambunctiously  with them. She has this strange habit to “go” for people shoes and shoelaces, chase pigeons and squirrels  and stalked/growls at small dogs met in the street. I meet quite often such pooches on my block, going after whatever object or creature moves in front of them. May be this is Isa’s issue? For sure she needs training after understanding what really is bothering her . She lived  happily and in harmony with her adoptive family counting young children but was brought back to us for the behavior we have observed this time around at the care center. Isa needs expert hands, patience and a loving new master. Will you be the one to give her this chance?

PROFILE

Isa is a 2 year old spayed Labrador mix that was cared for by her owner for the past three months. She is being surrendered because she has displayed aggressive behavior to people outside of the home.

SOCIAL LIFE & PERSONALITY

Isa lived in a home with a 2 year old and 7 year old child. Isa played well with the family that lived in the home, allowing petting all over. However when she encountered children and adults outside of the home, she barks heavily while lunging at them. Isa also barks and lunges at strange dogs while being walked.

DURING INTAKE

When Isa was approached she would lunge and bark. She was taken to medical once the intake was complete, no further behavior information was obtained.

BEHAVIOR—Experienced Home

Isa walks calmly on leash.  She was calm and relaxed during handling. Isa became was excitable (jumpy and mouthy light) but playful while playing tag. She was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. Isa took the toy away but had soft body language and was not interested in rawhide.

Isa was surrender to us. According to his previous owner Isa lived in a home with a 2 year old and 7 year old child. Isa played well with the family that lived in the home, allowing petting all over. However when she encountered children and adults outside of the home, she barks heavily while lunging at them. Isa also barks and lunges at strange dogs while being walked”. Isa shows a bit of concern during the tag interaction she became a bit over arousal. Because of her owner profile the behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction.
