04/10/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/10/15 12:43 Basic Info: Beauty is an 11 year old spayed dog who was gotten as a gift and has only had one owner. She was surrendered due to aggression and pet health. She was diagnosed with a heart murmer as a puppy and also has a fatty amss on her side. She does have an allergy to grain and has to be fed grain free food. Social Life and Personality: According to owner she is aggressive and fearful towards children and if she is cornered by children she will snapa nd bite. She is fearful of other dogs and will sniff them and then walk away. She is respectful fo cats (lived with one) and did not interact. She is house trained, kept mostly indoors, and has a low level or energy. She was described as shy, fearful, anxious, and mellow. Behavior: She has bitten 4 people before (none within the last 2 months) whenever food was being taken away from her. She has not bitten another animal before but did snap at a cat she lived with when they first were introduced when the cat ran away. She is not bothered when owner would take her off furniture and is afraid and will struggle when given a bath (did not show teeth or growl) and when her nails were clipped she will growl and try to bite. She is not bothered when being brushed and most times enjoys it. When unfamiliar people approach the house or family member she will bark but back behind the owner. She does not lunge or snap at them. When woken up she will lift her head and look around but does nothing else. New Family Info: She knows the commands sit, lay down, and stand up. She has gone to off leash dog parks and leashed walks and unleashed walks for exercise. When off leash she will stay close to owner’s side and come when called if she wanders. She does not play with toys or any games. She is crate trained and does well for 9 hours at a time inside a wire crate with a plastic bottom. At home she will either stay in a favorite spot or follow the owner around. Loud noises such as fireworks or thunderstorms she will become very scared and try to hide. She was fed dry food (New Balance) two times a day. She sleeps inside her crate at night. During intake would retreat from extended hand but after a minute or two she approached hand and sniffed it. When she was given treats she took gently from hand and ate. Allowed to be scanned (negative), collared, pictured, and leashed without aggression.
04/13/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Beauty is a gorgeous dog who does not look at all her age…eleven. She has been so well cared for but looks so bruised and scared in her kennel and out. She is hesitant to be leashed but eventually comes out for a little stroll around the block. Beauty’s den is spotless and orderly. She eliminates right away as we leave the care center, which tells me that she is very much house trained. She is a gorgeous dog dressed in an elegant and perfectly groomed lush coat in various shades of brown. I love her butterfly ears but her eyes are strained, tired and sad. She was owned and loved all her life but had to be surrendered as she displayed, according to her owners, aggression toward others than her family. She would be a very shy, anxious and fearful dog and have a tendency to guard her food. Here, at the care center, Beauty is very reserved. Leash free in a pen, she tends to stay in place but will come when called, show hand shyness but eventually will sit by my side for careful caresses and a sweet talk. Beauty is very shaken up and needs a slow approach. She seems to have some behavioral issues that forced her family to part from her. There might be a home out there, though, for this very shy girl, one counting a very patient, savvy and understanding new owner who might be able to work with Beauty. Beauty is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting for her new teacher and master.
04/14/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Beauty walks calmly on leash. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, wagging tail. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Beauty had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. She was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. Beauty was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Beauty was surrender to us. According to owner she is aggressive and fearful towards children and if she is cornered by children she will snaps and bite. She is fearful of other dogs and will sniff them and then walk away. She is respectful for cats (lived with one) and did not interact. The owner also stated that when people try to take it away and if people get too close to the dog’s food she will growl and bare teeth”. Because of her owner profile the behavior department feels that she would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 1. No interest. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful. Helper:A1032894
