07/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: She has grey on her muzzle, some bumps and lumps, and her back legs don’t work like I imagine they used to – Sunset is definitely heartbreaking to look at. But somehow her fragile 24 pound body houses the most lively, loving and resilient spirit. She is quiet in her cage, but when I approach she is very wiggly and even offers a submissive grin. Sunset loves to go on walks and seems to thrive in the company of people. She is a little tank on the leash and her back legs almost can’t keep up with her. Though she pulls some, it is not in a disconnected way – she often looks back as if to confer about how grand the world is. She seems housebroken and has been friendly when we’ve met other dogs through a fence (and seems ready to keep up with the youngsters!). Not surprisingly, she loves treats. She’ll sit for them, prop her paws on my legs to beg for them, and even weasel her way into my bag when I leave it unattended. When I have her off leash she follows me around, constantly wags her tail, and even play bows! She is very affectionate – she’ll rub against me as she makes herself cozy in my lap, roll over for belly rubs, and gently lick my face. Though it seems she was abandoned in her time of greatest need, in every face that we encounter Sunset sees only a new friend. While her name might describe the stage of her life Sunset is in, I inadvertently find myself calling her Sunshine – she is truly a joy, and for the rest of her days will brighten those of anyone that is fortunate enough to know her.
06/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sunset came into the care center as a stray, so we do not have any information on her past behaviors in a home setting. At intake she was reported to be sociable, and allowed all handling by a counselor. She was also sociable during SAFER, and maintained a relaxed body posture for all handling items. She was distracted during the tag interaction, but with coaxing she approached the assessor at the end of the game. During the resources portion of the assessment Sunset became stiff and bit the assess-a-hand when pushed out of the food bowl, and only showed minimal interest in the toys and rawhides. Due to the behavior seen on the food item we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needed coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food: 5. Dog bites the assessment hand. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog sniffs, then turns away. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog sniffs, then turns away. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Sunset is polite when interacting and is social when interacting.
06/26/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Sunset is polite when interacting and is social when interacting. 6/30 Update Sunset displays some selective behavior with a larger polite and tolerant male. She greets him face to face and he is tolerant but when he tries to move away she growls at him.
