A staff member writes: Meet Sunny! This handsome pup is blind and needs a place where he can get comfortable and call home! He’s as cheery as his name implies. He appears to be a bit overwhelmed in the shelter, and we hope that in a home environment where he can learn his way around and know what to expect, he will settle in and become a fantastic furry companion!
BEHAVIOR:
Sunny walks calmly on leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Sunny was calm and relaxed when playing tag with assessor. During the squeeze item he mouthed without applying pressure during handling. Sunny ate faster, was stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He was not interest in toys but put body between assessor and rawhide, showing no growling or stiffness.
The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter without children who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide positive reinforcement behavior modification to address His possible food guarding behavior.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, wagging tail.
Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure.
Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. He does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek.
Toy: 1. No interest.
Rawhide: 2. Dog takes the rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the rawhide, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
