A volunteer writes: It’s said that pregnant woman glow and after spending time with Suleika the same is true for dogs… I googled her name and it’s amazing how meaningful it is: Bright, Pretty, Peace, brings love and new starts in life, most beautiful woman….I mean, seriously…..every one of these meanings is a perfect fit. Quiet in her kennel, wagging her tail slightly as I unlatch her gate, she’s
leashed easily and out we go. Her leash manners are excellent, she’s likely housetrained, and she wags her tail as we walk. I tethered her for photos, but rather than paying attention to me and my camera she surveys her environment, smartly taking it all in. As another dog approaches to meet her, Suleika graciously welcomes her with a gently wagging tail and perfect manners. Sitting in the park taking some notes, Suleika sits by my side, softly touching me so we are one. As we hug and she gives me kisses, she reaches out her paw to hold me closer. Quiet, gentle, calm, loving dogs and people Suleika will undoubtedly be an awesome mom. Forget about how gorgeous her babies will be, but I see her as a gentle, nurturing mom. I’d love to give her a doggie shower for all the things she might need for her
babies….I can’t – but you can. Let’s get her safe so that she can have her babies in a safe and loving place, giving her the opportunity to be the best mom she can be. Not just a mom, but a gentle, loving companion, Suleika is ready to begin the next phase of her life….a mom, but more importantly and a loved and cherished family companion.03/31/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Suleika walks calmly on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Suleika was shy during handling, but had soft body language. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Suleika growled and snapped at the assess-a-hand during the food bowl, toy and rawhide test. She was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 4. Dog growls and snap. Toy 4. Dog growls and snap. Rawhide 4. Dog growls and snap. Dog – dog 1.
