06/27/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: So gorgeous, so quiet, so affectionate, so amazing, Suki had me at ‘hello’. Waiting in the front of his kennel for a walk he let me leash him easily and out we go. As soon as we stepped outside in the back he stopped walking and needed to be coaxed. Something was wrong. I looked at his feet and the pads on his feet are quite sore. It’s hard to know what happened to cause it – hot pavement? walking or running too great a distance? He is being treated for infection and is getting a salve on his feet now to help them heal. Despite his obvious discomfort Suki is a total lover boy, head in my lap, leaning on my hand tail wagging gently, and if I stop petting him he nudges me gently with his nose. Suki’s expressive face and gorgeous eyes are filled with love and look softly into mine. He’s too thin and is being fed an extra meal daily to help him gain some weight, and perhaps as a result of being hungry he wasn’t happy when food and a rawhide were taken away during his behavior test. In spite of his obvious hunger he takes treats gently. It’s recommended that he go into an experienced home with no young children until the extent of his guarding, if it exists once he is out of the shelter and at full weight, still exists. Back inside I held Suki while the vet put some salve on his paws, and Suki was kissy, tail waggy and loved the attention. He’s an awesome dog, who greeted other dogs politely in group, and is looking for a new home in which plentiful food, love and easy exercise until his feet are healed, is available. I love him, and know you will too.
06/26/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Suki walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Suki was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He showed some concerning behavior during the food bowl and rawhide test – stiffening and growling, but did not snap at or bite the assess-a-hand. Suki was not interested in toys The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. He may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address this food guarding behavior before placement into a permanent home. We also recommend a home without children. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide: 4. Dog growls. When off leash with other dogs Suki will briefly greet but is more interested in attention from handlers.
