A volunteer writes:  Suki is an adorable little piglet with the eager, pleading eyes of a well-fed dog still starving for love and attention and when she sits on request then follows up with a winsome head tilt I’m instantly smitten! Her midnight black coat may be a little shabby but Suki’s spirit shines bright as day and she loves to get out and about in the world, pulling like a little bull on leash but taking care of all her business promptly and even stepping off the curb to do her number twos! She loves treats and mouths them gently so we work together on a stop command and by the end of our walk she’s definitely starting to ‘get it’ and will turn to look at me when I speak and (mostly) pause to wait for her reward. Off-leash she likes to explore and stay on the move, flitting from one end of a pen to the other, chasing after a ball, sniffing her way around and meeting other dogs with enthusiastic vocalizing, a silly wiggle butt and a wagging tail. Suki may look like a wee dumpling but she’s no couch potato and a home with plenty of exercise and interactive play would be her dream come true. We’ve got puppy love galore at our Manhattan Care Center and Suki is right smack dab in the middle of it — come see for yourself what all the excitement is about!

BEHAVIOR:

Suki pulls a bit on leash. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, wagging tail. Suki was calm and relaxed during handling. She engages in play, body is loose and wiggly, mouth open. Suki did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. She was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away with a soft body language.  Suki did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home.

Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture.

Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game.

Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.

Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.

Food 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away

Toy 1: No interest.

Rawhide 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. she does not place her body between you and the rawhide.

When off leash with other dogs, Suki offers an appropriate correction for sexually motivated behavior. She engages in play and a playful puppy

GROUP BEHAVIOR: When off leash with other dogs, Suki is social and playful and engages in push and pull play. She is unfortable when solicited in a pushy manner.  6/23 Update:  Suki offers an appropriate correction for sexually motivated behavior. She engages in play and a playful puppy. 6/24 Update: Suki engages in push and pull play and is uncomfortable in a group of all females.
