07/15/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Stone previously lived with 2 adults and has been around children, but the owner states when both children and female adults visited the home Stone will bark and growl at them. Stone also lived with another dog but about a year ago had to be separated, and appears to have reacted to the other dog out of fear but we have very limited information on the conflict and on any methods used to try and resolve it, aside from keeping Stone caged for much of the day. At intake Stone was not handled by the counselor due to his stiff body language and growling. During SAFER Stone was not social, and maintained a stiff and fearful body posture for the handling items, as well as the tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment Stone was also stiff and could not be pushed out of the food bowl, but did not escalate to a growl or bite. He only showed minimal interest in the toys and when engaged with the rawhides, Stone would not relinquish the item, and became stiff as the assessor made attempts to remove the item from him. Stone has a lot of unaddressed fear and will give clear warning signals (growling, lip licking) but has not escalated to snapping or biting with humans or with other dogs, but Stone needs placement in a foster home or with an experienced adopter who can provide slow exposure to positive, rewarding experiences to address this underlying fear and anxiety. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide this home as well as counseling and support. Look: 3. Dog will not allow head to be held, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. His body is stiff, tail tucked, lip licks and whale eyed. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip licks. Tag: 2. Follows at end of leash, body low and fearful. Squeeze 1 & 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Body tense Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, his tail between his legs, ears are forward. His body is stiff. Dog does not lift his head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs, then turns away. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Stone is somewhat fearful but does interact a bit. Sexually motivated, tolerant of solicitation but not interested in play.
