05/21/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: On our first couple of walks Stewey was very easy to handle but proved to be quite timid. He was attentive, but in a cautiously optimistic way — it was clear he wanted to trust me and had no intention of responding in kind if I did something that showed he couldn’t. He walked well on leash and looked up at me often, but when we encountered commotion Stewey did an about-face and his eyes made it clear that he was ready to go back. We made a detour to the yard, where he slowly roamed around. He showed me that he knows “sit,” but the act itself is uncomfortable for him as there is little to no buffer between his bones and the ground. He would cower a bit and was head shy when I petted him, but still gave off vibes of pure goodness. He can be shy with new people, but Stewey has warmed up tremendously! He is still a skeleton, but now one adorned with a long wagging tail! He is crazy for treats, but never grabby or jumpy — he’s very patient. He seems to have some housetraning, seems calmly friendly passing other dogs, solicits attention from his cage and even play bows when I have him off leash. On our most recent excursions Stewey has looked back at me, done a little tap dance with his front paws, and then propped them up on me in a hug — no longer afraid to more boldly show the sweetness that was always there. Cameras, though, are still scary, so if you want to see this wonderful boy’s handsome smile, you’ll have to come meet him at Brooklyn ACC — please do!
05/12/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Stewey came to us as a stray on 5/8/15 so we don’t have any behavior information other than what we are seeing in the shelter environment. Upon intake it was reported that Stewey was loose and quiet for all handling. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items, but had slightly tense body language during the look and squeeze tests though he did not escalate or show any aggression. Stewey ate faster, was stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He only displayed minimal interest in the rawhide, but showed no interest in the toy on this portion of the assessment. The behavior department believes that Stewey can go to an experienced home that can provide food behavior modification and we recommend teaching Stewey “Drop It” and trade-up games. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is a bit tense and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. He indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog quickly pulls back his paw with slightly tense body language. Squeeze 2:1. Dog quickly pulls back his paw with slightly tense body langauge. Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. He does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide1: Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Stewey greets politely at the gate and is tolerant when greeted. He explores the yard and does not interact beyond the initial greeting.
