12/26/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hi – my name is Spruce, as in all spruced up! Get it? Or, Spruce tree but that’s not as much fun. I’m told I’m a handsome hunk, my coat is a deep deep brown and I have a deeper brown stripe down my back…cool huh?! I love to play with toys and play tug with a human, I sit when asked and take treats energetically, am housetrained, tail waggy and love other dogs. I’ve been in playgroup here with both males and females and I greet politely and then like to play. I met a new human named Volunteer and she took me for a walk to the park. I went potty as soon as I was outside and she told me I’m a good boy – I like hearing that and smiled at her. I posed for some pictures and then we came back to play in the yard. A pigeon flew into our pen and I chased it out. Whew! Keeping my human safe from pigeons – that’s important! I love to cuddle and give kisses, and am told I have a fun and friendly energy. I’m even an energetic cuddler. The behavior team tells me I’m awesome and can go to a home with an average amount of dog experience. So, don’t forget to ask to meet me when you visit – that’s S P R U C E.
12/24/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Spruce came to us as a stray, so we do not have any behavior information prior to what has been seen in the shelter. He was interested in exploring the behavior room and interacting with the assessor when entering the behavior room. He pulls a bit strongly on the leash and has a lot of energy attempting to jump on the assessor multiple times in excitement while in the behavior room. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining soft body language. During the tag interaction Spruce did become a bit over aroused and would play rough jumping on the assessor strongly, but did de-escalate quickly. He proved easy to handle when chewing on the toy item but maintained soft body language when the assessor attempted to take it away. The behavior department believes that Spruce can go to an adopter with an average amount of dog experience. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. He indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog becomes a bit over aroused and jumps on assessor strongly during play with soft body language. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Licks hand. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Licks hand. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
12/23/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Spruce is social and playful, engaging in running, sometimes mouthy play with both males and females. He can be forward when first meeting a dog but when offered appropriate correction he will slow down. He is respectful of dogs who are uncomfortable and is tolerant of dogs who lack appropriate social skills. The behavior department believes Spruce could go to a home with another male or female dog. When off leash with other dogs, Spruce is a bit forward during intial greeting, eventually solicits and engages in bouts of pushy play. 12/24: Spruce offers polite greeting, engages in bouts of play with males and females. 12/26 update: Spruce engages in bouncy play but may attempt to mount some females persistently after correction is offered. 12/29 update: Spruce continues to exhibit these behaviors when off leash with other dogs.
