I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 08/24/2015 from NY 11208, owner surrender reason stated was PERS PROB.

08/24/15 23:15 Spot is a white and black male American pitbull who is 3 yrs. old. Spot is not neutered and appears healthy but will undergo a full physical health exam. Spot is described as being energetic and smart but shy around new people. Spot has been socialized with children but is not necessarily good around them. Spot can be tolerant but will take time to become frienly with children and will not necessarily interact with them at all. He has been socialized with dogs and he is relaxed tolerant and respectful around other dogs. He will interact with them in a friendly gentle respectful and well behaved manner. He is an indoor dog who is house trained and is well behaved in the house. He can also be left alone in the yard and is wel behaved there as well. He is described as being a playful pushy confident excitable affectionate shy anxious mellow aloof independent and friendly. He is also described as having a high activity level and will be nervous when he hears loud noises. He has ben crate trained and will spend up to 5 hours in the crate. Spot knows the command sit and also understands the hand gesture for lay down. Spot has never had his food toys or treats taken away from him. He will growl when his nails are being trimmed or when a stranger approaches his home or family members. He is not bothered when he is given a bath having his fur brushed pushed off of the furniture being held or restrained or disturbed from his sleep. He likes to go for brisk walks and will also walk off of his leash. He will use the bathroom on concrete or grass. He will return when he is called and will also play in the dog park. He likes to play with balls stuffed and squeaky toys and will engage in chasing games. When he is in the house Spot will stay in the same room with his owner. He will also stay in his favorite place which is his crate where he sleeps. He will eat dry food once a day and will snack on any kind of treat. During the Intake process Spot was nervous growling at anyone than his owner. He allowed himself to be photographed while his owner held him and also allowed his owner to collar him. Spot was nervous growling and retreating between his owner’s legs but eventually allowed himself to be led away by staff.

Spot previously lived with 1 adult. The owner stated Spot has been socialized with children but is not necessarily good around them; Spot can be tolerant but will take time to become friendly with children and will not necessarily interact with them at all. The owner mentioned Spot is house trained, crate trained and is well behaved when home alone. The owner describes Spot as being a playful, pushy, confident, excitable, affectionate, shy, anxious, mellow, aloof, independent and friendly. It was reported by the owner Spot has a high activity level. At intake Spot was nervous and growling at everyone than his owner, he allowed all handling with his owner still present and helping the counselor. During SAFER Spot came into the assessment room nervous, no handling items was conducted as Spot freezes and growls at the assessor when the assessor attempts to get close to him. During the resource portion of the assessment on food item he allowed the assessor to remove his head out of the food bowl with a bit of pressure applied to his cheek, toy and rawhide items he displayed no interest. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body soft. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest.
