***HIS TIME IS UP!!*** Springsteen is one of those dogs who somehow has stayed at Brooklyn ACC for a while. Hard to understand why—he’s a young, stunning dog who no doubt is really really starting to feel all that comes with sitting in a cage 24 x7 for weeks on end. ACC proposes to relieve his stress by placing him on tomorrow’s euthanasia list. So tonight, Springsteen needs that special person who is ready for a full of life young dog, who is feeling like he’s got to break out of that cage and who has had it with all these strangers trying to “handle” him. He needs a dog savyy person with patience to let Springsteen decompress, with experience to help him relearn all his manners, and with the ability to let him know that he is safe, wanted and can restart his life. If that’s you, then start working on fostering or adopting Springsteen. But remember—at noon tomorrow, yet another stranger will come to Springsteen’s cage but this time, they’ll take him to that room from which no dog ever returns.

A volunteer writes: Sometimes quirks are something you need to learn to love, and other times, as is the case with Springsteen, they are the very things that make you fall in love! He is always quiet in his cage and sometimes entertaining himself with his blanket (not destroying it, but tossing it around). He has piercing, bright eyes and looks right at me, but occasionally outside it seems like he might have some visual impairment. In general he has no problem navigating, but has walked into the fence a few times when I’ve had him in the yard. When I pet him he sometimes cowers initially, but then seems to enjoy it and leans in. Springsteen can be a little shy at first, but toys almost serve as icebreakers and means of empowerment – he LOVES toys. His tail wags at the prospect of receiving one and if you let him, he’ll proudly carry one in his mouth throughout his walk. He likes to chase after them, too, but sometimes seems to have trouble tracking them. While I can’t help but feel bad for him searching for a ball that is a few inches from his face, the celebratory play bow he does when he’s reunited with it is enough to forget that sentiment. He pulls on the leash, but not in a disconnected way, in an excited, exploratory way. He seems housebroken, and though we haven’t encountered a real dog, we did stumble upon a statue of a dog and Springsteen’s reaction to it was nothing short of endearing. He had a high tail wag at first, but then softened and lowered it as he investigated, sniffed from tail to head, and then licked the metal spaniel on the mouth! Could you be this sweet boy’s match? Springsteen would love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
03/12/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog:A1029855 Springsteen was reported to be fearful at intake, but allowed all handling. He was also reported to be a bit nervous and tense during his medical exam, but was tolerant of all handling. During SAFER Springsteen appeared to be uncomfortable when interacting with the assessor and mad several attempts to exit the room. When relaxed he did allow the assessor to conduct some handling items without issue, but did become stiff and uncomfortable during the second paw squeeze. Springsteen only required a bit of pressure to his cheek to be pushed out of the food bowl during the food item, and he was not interested in the toys and rawhide items. During the dog-dog interaction, Springsteen rushed in quickly towards the helper dog with stiff body language. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is down, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip licks. Tag:2. Follows at end of leash, body a bit tense. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body soft. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail high, stiff body, head tall, and ears erect.
