Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Spike previously lived with 2 adults and a teenager but has never been around small children. The owner stated Spike is very shy and becomes fearful and will attempt to bite. The owner mentioned Spike is house broken and when home alone he becomes anxious. The owner describes Spike as gently, shy and very affectionate. At intake it was reported Spike was tense, very fearful with his tail tucked, he did allow all handling with assistance from the owner. During SAFER Spike came into the assessment room calm and shy, he was social and settle close next to the assessor, not all handling items were able to be conducted as Spike tried to bite the assessor on the first paw squeeze. He displayed no interest in any of the resource items during this portion of the assessment. Spike has a previous bite history, while Spike was in his kennel a volunteer tried to retrieve her leash from Spike’s neck and he bit her right hand near her thumb, leaving several puncture wounds. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is tense and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 5.
