04/20/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/20/15 11:07 Part 2 BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE: Spartacus did not allow Counselors to approach or scan upon intake. He barked and lunged once he saw the camera in Counselor’s hand. At which time Owner explained that he does not like anyone to approach him with a raised item in their hand. The owner scanned the dog for a microchip and placed him in a cage to minimize stress on the dog and to avoid an injury to the dog or Staff. Upon being picked up by the Driver’s, he allowed to be placed on a leash and loaded onto the truck with no problem.
04/25/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Just his name conjures up a warrior or gladiator but nothing is further from the truth. This gorgeous, and I mean gorgeous, dog is a bit shy, quiet in his kennel and looks for his people when we’re out for a walk. Surrendered by his family as they’re expecting a new baby, we’re told that he’s housetrained, sleeps in his crate at night, needs time to warm up to strangers and may bark at them at first, lived well with a 6 year old female Shih-Tzu, can play rough with adults but is gentle and respectful with young children including his former owner’s teenage special needs child. Spartacus showed off his housetraining skills as soon as we were out the door, and while he pulls slightly on the leash as we head to the park he’s completely manageable. He’s so good looking people called out compliments as we walked and I preened with pleasure at having such a handsome escort. Posing for some pictures he does that head tilt thing I love and wears his serious face for photos. Off leash in the yard he joins me on the bench for some hugs, not quite giving into the affection but definitely soliciting it. In group play with females (he hasn’t been with males yet), he plays nicely and respectfully. I started talking ‘baby talk’ to Spartacus and his tail began to wag and he got playful and leaned in for petting. SO cute! Spartacus likes to take care of his family and is looking for his new family who understands the word ‘forever’. He’s neutered and ready to come home. Meet him today.
04/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Spartacus walks calmly on leash. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Spartacus was shy during handling, but had soft body language. He had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. Spartacus did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Spartacus was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away with a soft body language. Spartacus was surrender to us. According to the owner, needs time to warm up to strangers. He is protective of the owner and of the family members when someone approaches them. He is very respectful when he spent time with Owner’s 15 year old special needs son. Spartacus played and was also respectful of Owner’s 5 year old niece that comes to visit. He is also very protective over her. Spartacus does not play with other dogs outside of the home, but he did live with a 6 year old female Shih Tzu and he played very relaxed and playful with her. Spartacus is nervous. He is not bothered by you removing his food bowl or treat away.” Spartacus was shy during the assessment but she stays close to the assessor. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. This dog is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) he is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food. No interest. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. When off leash with other dogs Spartacus may be unsure, once comfortable he may interact and become playful.
