09/26/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/26/15 11:16 Basic Info: Sparta A1052813 is a male gray & white 9month old American Staffordshire terrier mix who was given to the owner 2months from a friend and is being surrendered due to cost. He hasn’t been to a veterinarian and has no current health issues/injuries. Socialization: Around strangers Sparta is shy for a few minutes. He had been separated from the children & 2 cats in the home. When he spots a dog or cat on the street Sparta will ignore sometimes or bark at sometimes. He’s hasn’t bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: Although Sparta is walked outside a couple of times a day he’ll “go” indoors daily as well. His behaviors are unknown for the following: experiencing storms/fireworks, being disturbed while sleeping/resting, being brushed & having his nails trimmed. Sparta attempts to jump out the tub during baths & struggles to get away while being held/restrained. He’ll bark if someone unfamiliar approaches the home/family member. Sparta isn’t bothered with being moved off of furniture, having his food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved. For a New Family to Know: Sparta is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, shy (with strangers initially) & pushy (at times) with a low-very high activity level. The owner likes how sweet he is. Sparta loves being outside. When the owner is home he’ll follow them around sometimes. He enjoys ball, rope, stuffed & squeaky toys. Sparta is an indoor mostly dog who’s walked 1-2x a day for a few minutes where he pulls on the leash. Sparta sleeps on linen in the apartment hallway. He eats dry Beneful dog food 2x a day. His known command is “sit’. Intake Behavior: When approached Sparta attempted to make himself smaller, hide behind the owner & barked. He gave his tail a quick wag when spoken to gently. Once the owner left and after some treats along with being spoken to sweetly he allowed us to scan (-), collar him & take his pictures. At first Sparta didn’t want to enter the kennel but after some light coaxing he went in on his own.
09/30/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It’s hard not to fall in love with Sparta when you first meet him. He’s so shy, needing coaxing to come out of his kennel. Once out he takes a short while to warm up but when he does he’s in my lap for some hugs. He showed off his housetraining skills and his good leash manners, getting bouncy on leash from time to time – just being a puppy. Surrendered by his family we’re told that he is shy with strangers at first, was kept separate from the children and the cats in the home for some reason, has occasional accidents in the house but was only walked for a few minutes 1- 2x a day. Sparta doesn’t like getting a bath, loves being outside but was kept mostly inside other than the few minutes walk. I loved my time with Sparta, he’s a gorgeous young pup who needs to learn what it means to be part of a family. In group play he was shy and nervous with other dogs avoiding any interaction. I gave him a toy to play with and he played for a moment and then sat by my side as I took some notes. Clearly a dog who hasn’t been socialized much, Sparta is a “diamond in the rough”. He has all the raw material to be a rockstar companion and with security, love and positive reinforcement training will shine.
