A volunteer writes:

Playful and loyal…Owned since tender puppyhood…Playful with the young children of the house as well as with visiting small and large dogs..House trained, crate trained. Knowledgeable of a large number of commands, trained to detect certain drugs(Sophie got some military training)…The list of praises is so long that I bet that most of us do not have all the items present on our  own wish list for a good dog…Yet, Sophie has locked all her brilliant qualities inside a box that none of us until now have able to open…She will not settle for less than what she had. She will not accept that life has played a very bad trick on her… Indeed, Sophie ‘s family is a military one and she can not accompany her love ones in their move.. She has been so well cared for. Healthy, well groomed  and wearing  the silkiest ever seen coat that shines in the sun. I am very poor at recognizing breeds but this time, I got it right. American Bulldog and Chow and this is exactly what Sophie is. I find her breathtaking. Sophie is wary in her kennel but  accepts my leash. We walk and walk. at times her tail comes out from under her legs.  She is uncomfortable being tethered . She accepts my caresses  but is “missing in action”….She is terrified in playgroups…. No, we do not have the “real’ Sophie. She has wrapped herself in a thick shell, hoping to lesser her pain and  avoid more bruising….We, on our side, will try again and again, to gain her trust and open her mind to new horizons. We can only hope for the best and I so wish than in a few days, someone will erase this bio and write another one about  the reborn Sophie… If not, our dream is that a caring, savvy and understanding adopter or foster will believe in Sophie, take her home and pride himself or herself to have gotten the best forever best friend …Sophie is at the Manhattan Care Center.

A volunteer adds:
I can not yet discard my first comments about Sophie but I will report that she has made progresses. I even got a smile on her face when I started playing tag with her…Her tail is out, she walks more confidently and does come half on my lap for caresses. Emotions are running high but Sophie is an intelligent dog and she is trying very hard to cope with her new situation. I am very proud of her. Sophie and I are still hoping for a caring adopter or family to materialize. Sitting tight…

Personality :

Sophie is described as confident, mellow, and affectionate with a medium activity level. She lived with children ages 6, and 10. Owner says she was very playful and loving with them. Sophie also has daily interaction it a Bichon Frise and German Shepherd, and is said to be very loving with them. Sophie is taken out twice per day, and owner says she never has accidents. According to owner there has been no past issues of Sophie biting anyone or another animal. Owner notes that Sophie is trained to stop and sit when owner takes her food, and will wait for command o continue. Sophie is trained not to get onto furniture, and does not like nail trims but will sit and deal. When restrained Sophie will try to wiggle out, but remain friendly. Sophie is unbothered when someone unfamiliar approaches the home, but when outside she’ll growl if owner is not aware.

For a New Family to Know:
Sophie understands commands sit, come, stay, and give paw. Sophie is militart trained, and owner says she can sniff out certain drugs. sophie enjoys playing with stuffed toys, and when home stays in her favorite spots. When home alone Sophie is in her kennel. Sophie wines when hearing thunder, but will then calm. Sophie was fed dry food in a variety of brands. Sophie sleeps in her kennel, and is fine if disturbed while sleeping.

Behavior during Intake:
While Sophie’s previous owner was present, she growled at staff when we approached him . After he left she had a wagging tail, she allowed us to pet her, collar her, sat on command and showed no signs of aggression.
