Helper Dog:A103 Sophie previously lived with an adult and 2 teenagers, and the owner states Sophie has been exposed to other children and was said to be tolerant. The owner mentioned that when around other dogs Sophie will make introduction and she is generally interested in other dogs but not always receptive. The owner also mentioned that Sophie is tolerant of bathing and does not guard her toys or treats. It was also noted that if a stranger approaches the family Sophie can become defensive if they are loud. Upon intake it was noted that Sophie was receptive to introductions from counselor but was defensive towards other staff members and gave a warning growl. It was also noted that although receptive to slow petting and assurance Sophie maintained a semi stiff body and her tail was tucked. During SAFER Sophie maintained a stiff and fearful body posture, and growled when the assessor approached her. Due to this response and to avoid further stress for Sophie no other handling items were attempted at this time. During the resources portion of the assessment Sophie became stiff and lip curled when pushed out of the food bowl, and was not interested in the toys or rawhide items. During the dog-dog interaction, Sophie rushed in towards the helper dog with stiff body language while growling. Due to the behaviors displayed while in the care center, the department recommends placement with a New Hope partner, so the behaviors seen can be more fully explored before adoption into a permanent home.
