Social Life & Personality Soldier has been around children and plays with them in a gentle manner, there were times where he would even roll over on his back to allow the children to rub his belly. Soldier comes from a home with other dogs and played with the dog in a rough exuberant manner. They would play and run around the home together. He also lived with 3 cats and tolerated them, the owner would only be concerned when the cats would run. At this time Soldier would chase the cats in excited manner but would never hurt them. Soldier is an indoor only dog that is house broken. Soldier is described to be friendly, excitable, and playful with a medium/high activity level. Behavior Issues Soldier has never bitten another animal but has bitten a person in his past. Soldier would allow you to take food and toys. However when it comes to bones (Rawhide/Beef Bones) he will growl, snap, and even bite if you try and take it away from him. The owner wasn’t sure Soldier would respond to recieving baths, nail trims, and things to that nature due to never attempting to due so. Soldier will alow you to rub his coat and this can be done without issue. Soldier takes well to strangers and hasn’t display any form a of aggression towards new people. For a New Family to Know Soldier doesn’t know many commands but will sit if you tell him to. He went for slow walks on a leash and sometimes let into the yard to stretch. Soldier will engage in play with other dogs when it comes to toys but alone he has minimal to no interest in them. When in the home Soldier is the type to follow you around seeking attention. When left alone in the home Soldier is well behaved and this apploes to being left in the yard as well. Soldier was brought up eating both wet/dry food and the brands the owner gave was IAMS/Beniful/Pedigree.

05/06/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Soldier arrived at our center as an owner surrender after he guarded a bone in the home and yard. It is reported from the previous owner that he has been around children and plays with them in a gentle manner. It is also reported Soldier is coming from a home with other dogs and liked to play in a rough exuberant manner, and also lived with and tolerated cats. Soldier walked nicely on leash and did not pull. He held gaze for three full seconds during Look item. Soldier gave a low tail wag and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag, but did not engage in play. He needed mild coaxing to come back to assessor at the end of game. Soldier licked assessor’s hand during first Squeeze attempt, second attempt he gave no response at all. Soldier calmly allowed the food dish to be pulled away from him, and ceased eating when the assess-a-hand approached his cheek. Soldier kept a firm grip with loose wiggly body on toy item. He turned his head away with soft body while holding rawhide, not putting his body between but moving the rawhide away from the hand with his head only. Soldier scored very well on his SAFER assessment, and surrendering owner has reported he easily relinquished toys and food in his previous home in the past. However, he highly values bones and will guard when they are taken away. He has bitten over this resource in the past, and for that reason we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with neutral body, tail slightly wagging. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, needed some coaxing to approach at end. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog licks hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes rawhide away by moving his head, keeps a firm hold. His head only is between you and rawhide, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.

A Volunteer Writes: Soldier is a lover, not a fighter. He is a white and brown brindle cuddlebug and was brought in to the SI Center as a stray. Soldier has been spectacularly cared for and his coat is immaculate, his build is perfect and his personality is both friendly and happy. He is 12 months old and he is now facing a critical moment in his life. He has been transferred to Brooklyn due to Kennel Cough and is now making an appearance on the destroy list. Soldier has LITERALLY just come off stray hold and has never seen the inside of the adoptions room! He can be adopted directly via the NYC ACC website or fostered through a New Hope Partner. Please advocate for this young dog tonight because he is in danger. Get to know him through his pictures, volunteer comments and videos and then fight for his life. He is so worth the effort.
A shelter staff member writes (05/12/15): Soldier is a staff favorite! He is a sweet giant. Unfortunately he was brought back to ACC because he bit the owner taking a bone away from him. The other family member felt uncomfortable keeping him and now Soldier is back with us. He is released for New Hope partner ONLY and must be pulled online TONIGHT!
