He isn’t bothered by storms/fireworks, having his toys/treats touched/moved, being removed off of furniture, being held/restrained, being disturbed while sleeping/resting, having his nails trimmed or if someone unfamiliar approaches the home/family member. Smokie is bothered now by baths and being brushed because of his skin condition and will run away/hide. 07/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Smokie came to our center as an owner surrender. It is reported that Smokie is friendly and outgoing around strangers and lived with children ages 2-5 and was relaxed/playful with them. Owner also reports Smokie lived with a cat and was respectful of him. Owner states Smokie is anxious when left alone, barks and whines, and is crate trained. Owner also states Smokie does not like children touching his food or food bowl while he is eating, but did not specify which behaviors he displays. Smokie allowed all handling at intake with a loose wiggly body and took treats gently. Smokie pulled a bit on leash for his relief walk. He was wiggly and social with assessor throughout SAFER assessment. He pulled his head out of the assessor’s hands at three attempts during Look item. Smokie leaned in with a fast wag during Sensitivity item, body soft. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft. Smokie shoulder rubbed on the assessor while positioning for Squeeze. He quickly pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, displaying high energy and movement. Smokie required a moderate amount of pressure to lift his head out of the Food bowl, body stiff. He growled when assess-a-hand approached during Toy and Rawhide. When off leash with other dogs, Smokie sniffed the helper dog briefly before exploring his surroundings. Due to his potential for possessive behaviors regarding resources, the Behavior Team feels Smokie would do best in an Experienced home with No Children. He may benefit from learning the command ‘drop it’ and also trade up games. The Behavior Team also recommends Smokie continue to be crated when left alone to aid in quelling his anxiety when separated from his family. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth, fast wag. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back paw. Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff.
